THE DANGERS AND REWARDS OF CROSSING PARTY LINES

Bobby Wightman-Cervantes
Bobby Wightman-Cervantes, publisher of the BROWNSVILLE VOICE, in a recent article, takes issue with Democratic candidate for County Judge Robert Sanchez' endorsement of Republican Tad Hasse for the Texas State Board of Education.

In the article, Bobby essentially raises two issues that we characterize below:

1. Is it proper or ethical for a candidate for office of one political party to endorse a candidate of another party?
2. Is a candidate for office of one party obligated to reject an endorsement from a candidate for office from another party?

Bobby clearly states his view on question #1 below:

SANCHEZ RUNS AS DEMOCRAT BUT ENDORSES REPUBLICAN

"He actually has no clue how bad this looks. How do you run as a Democrat and then endorse Tad Hasse a Republican for the Texas State Board of Education."

Cameron County Democratic Chair
Amber Medina
We're not certain how Amber Medina and the Cameron County Democratic Party feel about Sanchez' endorsement of Hasse.  There very well may be party loyalty rules within the structure of the local party proscribing this kind of endorsement.

Certainly, free speech, by Robert Sanchez or any other American is protected, as is also the right of a political party to set up rules of operation, withholding the backing of the party apparatus and finances to violators.

Wightman-Cervantes strongly hints that Tad Hasse is under a moral obligation to reject the endorsement by Robert Sanchez, because he's running as a Democrat.  Note Bobby's words from the article:

"Great endorsement Tad, way to go. Tad will never address the controversy of the Republican controlled SBOE or denounce the endorsement by Robert Sanchez."

We would agree with Bobby if Robert Sanchez were a White Supremacist or a member of the KKK, but there's no indication Sanchez is a racist, but simply a Trump Democrat endorsing his conscience.

Tad Hasse
Politically, Hasse has the best of both worlds, likely with endorsements from two out of three candidates for county judge, Democrat Robert Sanchez in the primaries and Republican Carlos Cascos in the general election.  Why would he mess with that?

Actually, Hasse, to be successful, will need Democratic support in District 2's most populous counties, Cameron and Hidalgo, both heavily Democratic.  Without crossover vote in those two counties, winning by a Republican is impossible!

In 2020, la palanca voting, pulling the lever for candidates of a single party, will be eliminated from Texas voting booths.

Perhaps, Robert Sanchez, in his endorsement of an opposite party candidate, is simply saying "what's good for the voter is good for the candidate."

Charles “Tad” Hasse has Democrat support. That’s good! Eric Garza has no Democrat support. That’s bad.

Why vote for a Republican in a primary, who picks on Democrat Dr. Mika, if he will not win over Democrats in the General?

  3. Eric Garza is persona non grata in Cameron County Republican circles. His filing was a complete shock with the rank and file within the Party. How in the Hell is he going to win without the support and guidance from your local party? Who the fuck is running that campaign?

    1. Mr. Garza is a highly respected political consultant backed by Adela Garza. He is not a party jumper like Hasse.

    2. Like Carlos Cascos? Go ahead, Adela, tell everyone how Cascos is a Fake Republican because he was a party jumper.

    4. Have not seen Adela Garza put her neck on the line for this. Doubt she will! Her talent is getting others to stick their necks and reputations out for her campaign only. It will be a long wait if you think she's going to put her name and reputation on the line for you bozos. Ha ha suckers

  7. Eric Garza can’t win in the General Election.
Dr. Mika can’t beat an incumbent like Ruben Cortez.
It’s going to Hasse vs Cortez. Why are Eric and Mika wasting our time?

  9. When you have alleged, self-described "Democrats" like Eddie Lucio III selling out South Padre and Brownsville to big oil and LNG lobbyists... lines are crossed. It would be more helpful if you would document where alleged Democrats like the Lucios are, in fact, not Democrats at all, but vote time after time in line with money-grubbing Republicans. The Sucio Lucios are a good place to start.

“Hasse, Ann Richards, George Bush, Henry Gonzalez, Duardo Paz, Montoya, Ruben Edelstein, Cris Valadez, Mike Hernandez , Gilbert Hinojosa, Carlos and Hector Cascos, Amber Medina, Bill Young, Rick Bucholtz, Jim Wilkinson, Bill Hudson, Dr GF McHale Scully, Rebecca Sexton, Ruben Obell, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, John Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln and Galonsky. I like everyone and I like the courageous ones that run for office. I see nothing wrong for liking people.”

You didn’t make his list Barton.

  12. The first commenter "Jim you give hasse and sanchez too much credit. Neither one has any intelligence or common sense" got it right, which is really not a great feat considering that sanchez and hasse (one an idiot savant and the other a plain idiot) are running and have been running for years for some kind of office so people can talk about them and shit, but they have never won elected office and have zero expectation whatsoever of winning. They just want their pictures out there, people talking about them and shit. Our homegrown Nietzsche, Hasse wins people over with the charm of a Dr. Kevorkian visiting a retirement home. And Capt. Bob is having a blast being his same-old Uncle Fester self, grinning maniacally from ear-to-ear, holding a basket of just-fallen avocados from his back yard, plastering his wall with another rattlesnake skin, smiling at the attention he gets anytime someone mentions his name. He's the guy Buck Owens sings about in Act Naturally: the biggest fool that's ever hit the big time and all he's gotta do is act naturally. An "witeman"? well, he's a smart dog chasing way too many cars. Sanchez can endorse anyone he wants because (1) no one has told him otherwise, (2) it's Brownsville small timers and perennial losers flying under the radar and (3) by the time whatever legal or ethical issue is raised and resolved, the erstwhile candidates will have lost and no one remembers what the fuss was all about.

Not true. I’m a precinct chair. I want to endorse him, but Morgan says we aren’t allowed.

    1. She said it is unwise unless you’ve polled voters in your precinct dumbass. “Not allowed” and “fucking idiotic” are not always the same thing.

    2. Who is going to poll voters, Morgan? Does Trump or Abbott or Cascos poll voters before they endorse? You won’t let precinct chairs endorse because you are a control freak.

    3. Are any of those party officers that represent a few dozen primary voters they can call and identify with public record Morgan refers to every other meeting that they’re supposed to be in contact with? Nope. Next analogy.

Why are they bitching about grassroots not being represented when they’re too lazy to make a few phone calls and don’t want to represent the grassroots? Liz? Terri? Where is your righteous cause now when you want to dictate how people vote instead of reflecting it?
