Editor: This is in reply to U.S. Rep. Ruben Hinojosa's letter of Oct. 1 in our Herald.
Mr. Hinojosa, son of the founder of Hinojosa Meats in Mercedes, who is used to spending taxpayer money, calls the new Republican-sponsored nutrition reform bill draconian and harsh because it cuts $40 million from the wasteful food stamp programs.
"Desperately needed food" for the "starving" poor, says our leftist representative from Mercedes.
He says "200,000 hungry children would be kicked out of the school lunch program."
This Democrat is wrong, period!
I was a school counselor at Texas State Technical Instituted in Harlingen. On my many school visits in the Valley as a counselor, many of these "poor" students would throw this school food in the trashcan because they did not like it or were not hungry. Thus waste, I would say!
These 40 per cent of Hinojosa's constituents are not malnourished. Instead, many are obese.
Many of these "poor" have handheld personal computers, yet they are on welfare, in public housing, have fancy jeans, boots, new clothing and drive home in cars. Most of their parents are illegal or resident aliens.
Other government agencies like Open Hands and the Loaves and Fishes pantry also provide food assistance to so-called "poor people. Why should they work?
These people need to look for a job! But why should they__Their bellies are full with welfare and no physical work, only to receive a monthly allowance from taxpayers.
These people depend on us taxpayers. Enough is enough!
Unemployed leechers, look for a job. Do not ask, "How much are you paying?" You need a job, get it first, then you and your employer can negotiate your pay. If you did real well, you deserve a good day's pay; if you didn't do a good job, you are fired. It depends on your work and your attitude.
It's not how much you earn, it's what you do with what you earn!

ReplyDeleteWhoa! For once, the old fartknocker is right.!
Dags.
The "Food Stamp" program benefits companies like Wal-Mart at the expense of the taxpayer. It subsidizes low salaries with government money, which goes right back into the store for "food".
ReplyDeleteRegarding Rep. Hinojosa, for those with a short memory it would be interesting to see how his finances are working out. If I am not mistaken, he is on the House Financial Services Committee. He is a poster boy for term limitations. http://blog.chron.com/txpotomac/2011/02/texas-rep-ruben-hinojosa-files-for-bankruptcy/
Barrera always makes a lot of general statements that can not be backed up by facts because they are wrong. He is a lunatic who wishes death on tens of thousands. This sounds like a bombastic Barrera statement only it is true. I have never forgotten that back when the fall-out with Iran was in it's early stages and the U.S. embassy staff was being held hostage (refer to the movie Argo) this counselor to our youth, this advocator of reason was insisting that the U.S. use nuclear weapons against Iran. That this would kill tens of thousands of Iranians that were as much a victim of their government as the U.S. hostages did not seem to be a matter of consideration. This is not a healthy mind.
ReplyDeleteDespite the hateful words, Barrera can be a likable older man. His pontifications originate from a lack of understanding, ignorance if you will. Unfortunately, he has been an educator in a position to do a lot of real harm. If you could filter out the racism, braggadocio and skewed perception, there is a lesson of self-reliance, strong work ethic, etc., worthy of imitation and respect, but the fact is, that, there is no such filter. Every time the man opens his mouth, he proves not to be worthy of that respect
Delete"position to do a lot of real harm" is correct. His motivational speech always included his holding up his hand to show-off his diamond ring. I feel sorry for his family; the man is sick.
Deletewhat's the point of re-publishing this, Jim. Unless you agree with him. Is that it?
ReplyDeletegiving an idiot a forum also makes you look bad, dude.
Barrera expresses a point of view that needs to be discussed, not hidden from view. He was, is an educator, influencing the lives of young people. He is an officer with the Cameron County Republican Party. His comments were printed in the Brownsville Herald. Why shouldn't they be analyzed and discussed?
DeleteYou would think that by now, his family would have done something (even in an extreme fashion ala One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest ) to shut the old geezer up. My suggestion would be to have him confined in an insane asylum.
DeleteDags.
The food stamp program is heavily directed by lobbyists. It is no accident that a food stamp card can buy diabetes and obesity-inducing crap like Cheetos, ice cream, sugary cokes, processed junk pastries...... but a healthy broiled chicken is not allowed! The Texas Beverage lobbyists, cane sugar and (high fructose )corn syrup industry lobbyists, Frito Lay and others go into overdrive whenever an item comes up to remove candies, chips or sugary crap from the food stamp allowable list. Don't recall the exact number around 20% of Texans are on food stamps, probably between 40-60% of people in the valley are on Lone Star, WIC etc. It's a free government subsidy for these companies and they pay lobbyists and fight hard to keep their products available to the food stamp market.
DeleteWell we know this area is considered as an area of the US with a high rate of obesity as quantified by the CDC. Also, here's a little homework for you. Check with BISD and ask what percentage of the breakfasts that are mandatory to serve to each student are thrown away. Anecdotally from what I witness it is over 50%. So on these points alone I see no real outrage with what I read above.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, Mr Barrera uses a bombastic turn of phrase - but this does not make his points of view invalid. It seems that he hasn't learned about attracting more flies with honey; but, could be he's not interested in attracting flies!
ReplyDeleteI dont know Mr. Barrera but through his published points of view I've learned to have little or no respect for the man. I hate myself for saying this but I AGREE with him in one point: There is a great deal of waste in the school lunch system. I was in the public education system for 31 years, and I saw first hand how students got to school and threw their breakfast and their lunch plates many times only getting the juice or the milk. They would go to the local stripes to buy a flour tortilla with papas con huevo for breakfast. During lunch, they would get the whole plate and only eat either the nachos (what is so healthy about that?) or the tatter tots, they would buy tostaditas, cheetos, cokes and that was their lunch. From elementary to high school, the tax payer is paying for all this waste. These are AMERICAN born and raised kids, NOT the illegals or other races (like many times Mr. Barrera expresses in his racist views. Like everything else, it starts at home. If mom and dad allow their children to eat junk food, of course they will be obese as they grow older. Oh, and this is not a RGV problem, this is a NATIONAL problem
ReplyDeletePoint taken. The valley and Brownsville in particular have had the highest rate of obesity and diabetes in the nation for over 20 years. We MUST open our eyes to this detrimental problem that we are handing down to our children and grand children. I remember when my elders would try and correct my mistake from attempting to copy their action. They would alert me to how as a society we (younger people) are becoming more intelligent with the ease to books and literacy at our hands. My father and grand father did not have this luxury. Parents step up and teach our kids, carnitas and tripitas our part of our culture. however everything in moderation. I don't agree with most of what this man says and cannot testify as to how many plates are being tossed by students. But this is a public safety alert that we all need to take into consideration.
ReplyDeleteOh I disagree with with the last sentence from 5:26
ReplyDeleteThis is an RGV problem and has been for years! Highest rates of obesity and diabetis in the country for over 20 years per capita.
On the subject of jobs.....there seems to always be a "program" to created jobs here, but we never hear the results of these "programs". United Way has a Veterans Coalition focused on getting jobs for vets.....are there any numbers to indicated how many veterans have gotten jobs through this program. The county Workforce Solutions has a similar program....are there any statistics that show how many people are getting jobs????? We hear a lot of talk about jobs but we never see statistics of how many jobs these agencies get for people. Why is that???
ReplyDeleteJobs, what stinking jobs? U want jobs, U want jobs? Get a stinking leader u piece of s@#t. Oh I see what your talking about. you mean the ones leaving Brownsville? Huh, Huh? Like T Mobile and "Merry Christmas" Convergis. Bye bye converges and 1,200 jobs that will never be replaced. 600 jobs lost from T mobile. Thanks for the leadership Mayor Martinez. You've managed to lose close to 2,000 jobs since you've taken over. Even illiterate Pat wasn't able to do that.
ReplyDeleteJust like b HUSSEIN obammie has massacred the national job market Tonia Martinez had to follow suit. THAT'S HOW democRATS roll lmao lmao lmao
DeleteBISD has a new way to fleece tax payers, it's called breakfast in a bag. After the school district spent millions on refurbing the high school cafeterias a few years later the decide that not enough students were eating the prepared breakfast; the dirty secret is that the district is paid more than they spend for breakfast for our kiddos. So basically by handing out breakfast to the students as they go to first period class they can say that all of the students are being fed, bump up the numbers, and the district makes about $1.25 per breakfast. Believe me, there are many breakfast meals that are just thrown away every day.
ReplyDeleteSo I ask you, is this fraud?
