Gowen vs. Uresti, City Commission At-Large B . . . . . Elitist vs. Common Man

Roberto Uresti has been to more city commission meetings than the city commissioners themselves,  almost always there to convey an idea no one else has considered.  He is always respectful, usually smiling, never overdressed.  He may have a list of the addresses of dilapidated homes needing to be  repaired or torn down before they become crack houses or fire hazards or he may simply tell the commission thanks for responding to something he brought to their attention.  When Chief Financial Officer Pete Gonzalez offered that the city's budget had been trimmed to the absolute barest of bones, Uresti stepped to the podium and rattled off several ways for the city to save money off the top of his head.

Uresti has been rightfully criticized for improper sentence structure on Facebook.  Perhaps, like Samuel Clemens who wrote under the pen name Mark Twain, Robert just needs a good proofreader.  Clemens, you recall, claimed to "have nothing but contempt for a man who could spell a word only one way," as he was a notoriously poor speller.  Uresti lists studies in economics and business at Texas A&M on his resume' and is a retired BISD teacher.

Dr. Rose Gowen, a gynecologist(some say currently non-practicing) and the incumbent City Commissioner for District At-Large B, speaks up far less frequently at commission meetings than Uresti, usually simply acquiescing to whatever Mayor Tony wants.  Only health issues seem to pique her interest.  Maybe a role at the city's health department would be more appropriate.  Gowen also has the reputation for being the town's nanny, almost making New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg look libertarian.  Gowen is said to have once proposed that hot dogs and other unhealthy food items no longer be sold at the city's sports park.  Perhaps, she would also favor changing the lyrics of Take Me Out to the Ball Game  to "buy me some tofu and carrot sticks."

For many this race seems to be clear-cut:  Elitist incumbent Gowen who evidently feels some obligation to rubberstamp Mayor Tony's agendas due to his financial and organizational support of her campaign versus the energetic Uresti, a gadfly, community activist who may be well-served to use a proofreader for written public statements.

  1. Jim you never fail to articulate the truth. Thank you for your perspective. Uresti has earned the right to run for city commission. He truly is a diamond In the rough ... Un "diamante en bruto". It will be a great service to the community if the voters can prove an underdog in this scam of a political process can prevail.

    1. I wonder how Duardo Paz Martinez would respond to that? If Mr. Barton would allow him, that is.

  7. While I feel Dr. Rose just rubber stamps everything the Mayor does. Mr. Uresti would be terrible for Labor. He feels no one deserves a raise union or non-union. Just a little extreme for my taste. Rose is no picnic either.

    1. So Anonymous of March 25, 13,@845am What your sayin its better to have a 3rd rate doctor who couldn't succeed in her private practice, to misspend the people's money than, Mr. Uresti will spend our money like it's his. I personally heard Rose Gowen refer the people's money and I quote, " IT'S FREE IT'S FREE MONEY." I want you to know Mr. Uresti built his home for under $25,000.00 fully paid for and he's practically debt free individual. That's the kind of person we need in our the commission that knows the value of our hard earn money and how to invest it wisely. Robert Uresti is such an individual. HE HAS MINE AND THE ENTIRE FAMILY'S VOTE.

    2. Mr Uresti is a whacko. But I may just vote for him to change the dynamic in the City Commission. At least he let's you know where he stands. (even if he is a tea party favorite) He will be independent at least and that I can respect. Ni modo, de Guatemala a Guatapior.

  8. Rose Gowen isn't a "elitist", she is just a Zavaletta/Zavaleta. Their grandeur is in their on little minds. She is trying to become Brownsville's equivalent of New York's Mayor Bloomberg....dictating policy for the downtrodden. Unfortunately she focuses only on her own policy agenda and then supports Tony Martinez for everything else. With her, we may be healthier, but with Tony we will be broke. One issue commissioners are not good for this community. Robert Uresti may be a rascal, but every issue he raises is to improve the circumstances of the average citizen.

  11. I am sorry, but I will not be voting for Uresti. Check out his certification with the State Board for Educators Certification. Anyone who has to voluntarily surrender his certification should not be running for anything.
