What It Means If Filemon Vela Rejects the Lease Offer From the City Commission

Filemon Vela, Rose Vela
If the reports are correct that Mayor Tony Martinez played the role of benefactor,  climbing to the top of City Plaza, showing Filemon Vela "all these kingdoms of the world" as office space for the newly elected congressman, then Vela's decision in the next few weeks will be instructive.

The Man Who Would
Be King
Mayor Martinez exited executive session at the City Commission building this past Tuesday as something less than the "shining one", more like an Iran hostage declaring his newfound love for the Ayatolla while reciting a prepared message that included the phrase "market rate."  He publicly offered Filemon Vela office space atop City Plaza at $1.40 per square foot, exactly $1.40 more than previously promised.  The mayor looked nervous, awkward in laying out the proposed agreement.  Assistant Attorney John Chosy seemed unsure if the lease agreement would be accepted by Vela.  Commissioner Melissa Zamora rightfully made certain that City Secretary Estela duly noted her abstinence from voting, lest her earned social media dollars from Vela be declared a conflict of interest.

One local commentator makes an issue of the fact that no signed lease for a dollar exists.  Duh!  I don't recall anyone saying anything had been signed, sealed and delivered, just likely offered.  If Vela rejects a basic market rate for office space, wouldn't that indicate he may have been offered a better deal initially by the mayor who, as has become his style, did not involve the commissioners in the process?

  1. In the mayor's defense it was not he who offered the lease to Fil Vela, it wa Carlos Marin. Marin is the Con Mn that sold Brownsville the imagine Brownsville boondoggle for one million dollars.. he is the one parading Fil to all the city boards that Carlos Marin Controls, BEDC, GBIC, and the city commission for that matter. Rose Gowen works ,for his wife at Su Clinica Familiar and is stacking people for the next city election. He uses the majority in these boards to fill his pockets Jmbo. Check him out,...you will be very surprised!

    1. You are absolutely correct. Marin has run under the rada for far too Lon. He has become a millionaire on the backs of the tax payers. H wants to make Mike Gonsalez the next city manager but needs one more vote on the commission. That is why he is supporting Gowen again and recruiting that Portilla lady.

  2. It seems difficult to understand why Vela would be looking for a free ride when it is my understanding that each Congressman is provided with funds for office and staff ... is there a missing link to this story?

    2. Maybe he wanted to use the money saved on rent to raise salaries.... I don't even know if he could do that.. Just a thought

    3. More like the dumbasses on the City Commission who had been promoting losers Ramiro Garza and Denise Blanchard, now belatedly trying to gain favor from the Vela bandwagon by offering city property for free... lol

  5. If Vela accepts the offer of Martinez and Marin....no matter what form....his constituents in the 10 other counties he represents should be concerned that he isn't going to be fair in his representation. Vela would be wise to rent space independent of the city of Brownsville and pay for it at the going rate, using his office funds provided by Congress and the taxpayers. If he accepts the offer of Martinez and Marin, I hope all his constituents in other counties protest. If Vela accepts an offer that hasn't been approved by the entire city commission....then same on Vela, Martinez and this strap-hanger Marin. If they want to part of a dictatorship, we are sure Juliet Garcia can find them a place at UTB. Tony Martinez is losing public support quickly by his "regal" decisions without a commission vote.
