Photos from Lincoln County, Oregon

From the editor:  A letter has been circulated in Lincoln County, Oregon entitled "THE BROWN ROUND-UP, PART 1," urging locals to support the "largest round-up of brown illegals in our history" starting in "the last part of January 2025."

The memo urges citizens to jot down the license plate numbers of any "browns" at church or the plate numbers picking up "browns" at schools and to pay special attention to the license plates of workers of "construction crews" and "landscaping crews."

The letter also claims that "brown people" from Idaho and Montana are being "shipped in" to Oregon and to pay attention to those out of state license plates, jotting down the numbers.

Next, the letter claims that, on January 21, 2025, Homeland Security will create a "hot line" "to which you can send your information."

The letter continues: "When Homeland Security starts their round-up process these brown folks will be placed in county jails to which the counties have signed a contract.  These counties will be reimbursed and the brown folks will remain until the camps are completed in Texas and they are transferred there."

If this letter was sent out by Trump supporters to create fear and panic, the response from the Lincoln Country Sheriffs Department quickly condemned the letter.

We're posting the letter from Lincoln County Sheriff Curtis Landers below:

Lincoln County Sheriff's Office Response to Concerning Letters Circulating

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office recently learned about a letter being circulated throughout Lincoln County which encourages community members to track and report information regarding people of color, specifically community members that are believed to be undocumented.

We want to be unequivocal in our stance: this type of behavior is harmful, divisive, and inconsistent with the values we uphold as public servants and community members.

Targeting individuals in this manner erodes trust and undermines the sense of safety and inclusion that we strive to maintain in Lincoln County.

One of the things we tell each person when they join our team is to “do the right thing.”

We are encouraging our community members to do the right thing and use compassion as we encounter these types of messages. We strongly advise against engaging in activities such as those outlined in this letter, including collecting or sharing information about individuals based on their demographic or perceived immigration status.

In addition to valuing diversity and equity, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is committed to upholding Oregon law with regard to immigration enforcement.

Oregon law generally prohibits the inquiry or collection of an individual’s immigration or citizenship status, or country of birth, with few specific exceptions as outlined in Oregon Revised Statute 181A.823.

Consistent with this, the Sheriff’s Office does not inquire about, document, or share such information with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

These provisions are embedded in our policy manual and are essential to ensuring that our practices respect the rights and dignity of all individuals.

The mission of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is to enhance public safety, reduce the fear and impact of crime, and improve the quality of life for all. We are committed to continuous learning and growth to better serve every member of our community.

Diversity strengthens our communities, and we take pride in growing and thriving alongside the people we serve.

Sheriff Curtis Landers

Attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans kills 15, injures 35

Donald Trump has blamed both the New Orleans terrorist attack and the explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck in Las Vegas on Joe Biden's "open border" policies:

“With the Biden ‘Open Border’s Policy’ I said, many times during Rallies, and elsewhere, that Radical Islamic Terrorism, and other forms of violent crime, will become so bad in America that it will become hard to even imagine or believe . . . . . That time has come, only worse than ever imagined. Joe Biden is the WORST PRESIDENT IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICA, A COMPLETE AND TOTAL DISASTER,” he added. “What he and his group of Election Interfering ‘thugs’ have done to our Country will not soon be forgotten! MAGA.”

What Trump chooses to overlook is the fact that acts of terrorism in the United States come primarily, not from our southern border, but from U.S. citizens with military experience.

The person arrested in the New Orleans terrorism incident, killing 15 and injuring 35, is Shamsud Din Jabbar, 42, an Army veteran born in Texas.

The owner of the Tesla Cybertruck that exploded in Las Vegas. killing 1 and injuring 7, was Matthew Livelsberger, an Army soldier from Colorado.

Most of us remember Timothy McVeigh, the perpetrator of the Oklahoma City bombing, killing 167, injuring 685.  McVeigh was also an Army veteran, who, like Jabbar, became radicalized.

The simple fact is that our country has suffered more deadly terrorism at the hands of American-born citizens who are military veterans than from any people crossing our southern border.

This won't be an attempt at a serious review of the movie, "A Complete Unknown," as Dylan fans have seen or will see the film and likely don't want to read someone else's view of it.  Sunrise Mall Cinemark had just a smattering of viewers for the 12:50 PM showing in Theater 4, to my left a lady with a walker and, to my right, a gentleman with his white hair tied into a pony tail, and, behind us, about a dozen younger people.

The one Dylan quote I identify with is "being born in the wrong town to the wrong parents." Wherever I've been I've had the feeling of being different, a misfit, not fitting in with those around me despite their good nature.

The opening scene of Dylan in 1961 New York looked familiar to me since I was there in 1958.  Just like I used to do when I was ten years old, I found myself wanting to call out the make and model of every 50's car on the street.

Monica Barbaro

Actress Monica Barbaro gave it a shot, but no one sings like Joan Baez

I'll stop there as I've already said too much.

Driving toward Mexico Boulevard at about 12:50 PM on New Years Day, it occurred to me that the Eddie Garcia event, scheduled for 1:00 PM, where he would sign the paperwork to be tax assessor/collector for the county, might be held in the lobby of the Amigoland Convention Center, not the auditorium itself.

I couldn't have been more wrong as, not only was the auditorium full to capacity, the overflow crowd nearly filled the lobby and all the tables in the auditorium were full.

All of this interest in what is essentially a clerical position?  Well, maybe that's understating it as property taxes take a big bite out of the budget for so many families in Cameron County, while the county depends on those funds for its facility to provide services.

As I walked up toward the stage to stand along one wall, a local minister was invoking a greater deity's blessing on Eddie Garcia, calling for him to be "righteous and just."  Even as an agnostic, I agree with that invocation and sentiment. (Agnostics and atheists typically are voluntarily moral, even without the threat of everlasting punishment.)

Chili Willies Bar & Grill, Arroyo City

Administering the oath of office to Eddie Garcia was retired Judge Arturo Cisneros Nelson, my neighbor for six years in Arroyo City, although I've never actually met him.  Yet, the first pachanga I ever attended was at the Chili Willies Bar & Grill in Arroyo City.  Fully expecting to meet Nelson, I was met only by two extra-long coolers, one filled with Miller Lite, the other with Bud Light and a barbacoa plate, but no personal appearance by Art.

Eddie Garcia
signed the necessary paperwork, then re-signed one document in "blue" ink to match the first, insuring there would be no hiccups.

While her older brother Eddie was re-signing the document, District Judge Gabby Garcia took the podium to say some nice things about her brother, but, when Eddie returned, he introduced his superior officer in the Brownsville Police Department, former City Manager Charlie Cabler

Cabler, appearing stress-free and fit, described Eddie Garcia as a police officer; "calm," "able to handle stressful situations with ease and common sense," "looking out for our young people."

"His word is gold," Cabler stated. (While Cabler was speaking, all I could think of is what he told me a couple months ago, sitting next to his super-supportive wife, Rosie: "The best thing about retirement is not seeing your name or likeness in the blogs."

Garcia finished the evening by calling the entire staff of the tax collector/assessor department forward, no, not for a group picture, but to give them first dibs at the food plates.  Garcia, who starts the peaceful transference of power tomorrow, already has the staff on his side.
