With the price of eggs and gasoline foremost in everyone's mind, I've been checking on possible destinations where living might be cheaper than Brownsville, Texas.  There are a few options, while some areas have priced themselves out of my range.

Hell, gas was a wallet-busting $2.39 per gallon at H.E.B. yesterday, while a dozen large eggs in a styrofoam carton sold for $3.97.

Let's deal with gasoline for now.

Hong Kong seemed intriguing when I was there briefly in 2018, but gasoline at $14.06 per gallon is well out of my range.

Even Iceland at $10.28, Norway at $8.48, Italy at $7.95 or France at $7.08 would break my budget.

Why is Saudi Arabia, with all their oil, selling gasoline for $8.82 per gallon?

I've no idea what Pemex in Matamoros gets on a gallon of gas, but the country of Mexico is said to average $4.09 per gallon.

I'd consider Russia at $2.16 per gallon, but I don't like the cold and what if I made some smart remark about Vlad Putin and wound up in detention?

Living on one of the Philippines many islands while paying $3.59 per gallon seems promising, but why even own a car when you can ride a bus, jeepney or tricycle for about a quarter?

Inexpensive transportation in the Philippines

Egypt
, somewhere near the pyramids, might be a viable option at $1.33 per gallon, but Kuwait looks even better at $1.06.

Kuwait City

So, Kuwait it is, with the world's cheapest gas at a mere $1.06 per gallon.  A dozen eggs?  That will set you back .808 Dinar, roughly $2.63, .34 less than Brownsville's H.E.B.

A gentle warning, though, about Kuwait: Hand holding in public is forbidden.  Impersonating a woman, something some LGBTQ+ friends might be charged with, can draw a prison sentence as does public cursing. Women need permission from a male guardian to marry, while their husband can have up to four wives and separate from any without giving a reason.  Oh, women do not have custody of their children in this country.

But, dont' be dismayed.  Kuwait has cheap gas.

  1. While calculating prices per gallon, I was aware that most countries sell gasoline by the liter, so I simply multiplied the liter price by 3.785, recognizing a liter as slightly larger than a quart. Had I included the Canadian price in the article, I would have made an adjustment for the imperial gallon which is 1.2X the size of the American gallon, thus Canada's $5.74 per Imperial gallon equates to $4.78 converted to American gallons.
