Donald Trump
keeps telling America exactly who he is and the Puerto Rican community in the United States, some 6.2M, is listening.

At a campaign rally in New York's legendary Madison Square Garden, comedian John Hinchcliffe joked about an "island of floating garbage in the middle of the ocean we call Puerto Rico."

Before that racist quip, the Trump rally comedian had this to say:  "Latinos love making babies.  They do. . . They come inside and there's no pulling out, just like they did to our country."

For those who think Trump himself doesn't view all Hispanics as inferior, don't forget his statement as he rode down the gold escalator in Trump Tower in 2015 to announce his candidacy for President, referring to "Mexican Nationals" as "rapists" and "criminals."

The pushback was swift from noted entertainers in the Hispanic community from Puerto Rico, with Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony issuing statements condemning the remarks from the Trump rally while endorsing Kamala Harris for President.

What Trump seems not to understand is that residents of Puerto Rico are U.S. citizens, paying taxes to our treasury.

Trump's ignorance and racism was on full display when 2017's Hurricane Maria devasted the island, and U.S. citizens found themselves without food, electricity or clean water while Trump repeatedly blocked aid from being sent to the country.

While the island rocked from the devastating storm, Donald Trump discounted FEMA's death toll figures and publicly fought with San Juan Mayor Carmen Cruz Soto over what support the island needed.

It wasn't until just before the 2020 election that Trump finally released a $13B aid package for the island.

U.S. citizens of Puerto Rico will not forget Trump's suggestion of trading Puerto Rico for Greenland or his cavalier, sarcastic tossing of paper towel rolls at citizens lacking clean water and electricity.

Trump's racist mishandling of the Hurricane Maria recovery, in itself, demonstrates his absolute unfitness to hold public office.

  1. Jim, you have a bad case of TDS. If you don't know what that is its Trump Derangement Syndrome.

    1. You're close. I've certainly noticed Trump's derangement, racism and incompetence. While I know "politics is local," it's hard to get worked up over a local justice of the peace race, when the presidential election will set the entire tone and direction of our country.

  2. While I will be voting Harris even though it will not make a difference in Texas, you still do not understand this election. You also do not understand the Latino people. In large parts of Central and South American they make fun of Mexicans. Many Latinos hate the Puerto Ricans and Cubans for the special treatment they get. The new immigrants consider the established US Mexican Americans to be lazy, they are not. But having said that, the Trump people only care about three issues, and the Democrats are not talking about any of them. National polling finds the majority of the people do not trust the government, the courts or journalists. This is Trump every day. Now do I think he is going to do anything about the three, no? He will not have the votes. The people are idiots for believing him.

    1. Some good points, but assuming some of us don't understand prejudices and resentment within ethnic groups is incorrect. I've seen those resentments within the Black and Hispanic communities. So-called "light-skinned Blacks, usually half-white, are sometimes resented as are, as you stated, Cubans and Puerto Ricans. Trumpism feeds on all of those divisions as his campaign is largely directed by White supremacist Stephen Miller.

  3. Trump refused aid to Puerto Rico because he didn't believe it was part of the United States. What an estupido!

  4. You got it Jim Barton. The latinos are insecure, abusive and have no respect for each other. But maybe now they will see reality and unite against Trump. All latinos, hispanics are not valued and yet they give what the USA needs: cheap labor, children and no drug addictions. Many of my friends are Republicans because they want to be part of the powerful, rich and white group. They are confused but they are happy in their craziness.

  5. Maybe Trump forgot that Puerto Rico is the USA. They are American Citizens. I always forget this. Puerto Rico should not support Trump nor anybody that is a Latino or has visited the Island. The story is ugly: Trump is attacking his own fellow Americans: The Puerto Ricans.
