A couple people simply shrugged their shoulders when I asked the significance of the rocket replica positioned in front of Matamoros' municipal building.

"Is Mexico intending on competing with SpaceX in rocketry?" I asked, getting mostly chuckles.

One plausible explanation was given.

"Mexico is enhancing their tourism by promoting Bagdad Beach as the ideal location to witness SpaceX rocket launches.  It's in close proximity to SpaceX without the crowds that may flock to South Padre Island," said one gentleman.
