 From the editor:  Rene Torres sent this beautiful photo of Lillian Merkling published below, winner of a 1922 Houston Chronicle beauty contest for the entire valley.  Lillian's daughter, Lucy, who still lives in Brownsville, shared the photo and Brownsville Herald advertisement for the contest with Rene.
