Harlingen "Pastor" Luis Cabrera at BISD last month

With Florida and Texas seemingly leading the way, the dumbing down of our country continues at warp speed with book bannings and attempts to prevent students from learning about such atrocities as the holocaust and Black slavery.

Sometimes it's religious zealots like Harlingen preacher Luis Cabrera pushing hard for books to be banned, as he did last month before the Browsville ISD Board of Trustees.

Mission ISD succumbed to the pressure, with Superintendent Carole Perez agreeing to the removal of 676 books from that district's libraries, then got fired anyway.

The Diary of Anne Frank

One of the banned books, The Diary of Anne Frank, chronicles the memoirs of a teenage Jewish girl in The Netherlands during Nazi occupation, her family in hiding for two years.

Some of these "Christian" crackpots are possessed with an obvious anti-Semitism, one recently quoted as saying "the Jews killed Jesus."

Well, yes, dumbass, but Jesus and all of his apostles were also Jews, and their own people delivered Jesus to the Roman authorities for execution as the apostles scattered.

While Texas Governor Greg Abbott is said to be "on board" with the books removed in Mission, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has notoriously called for the 400 year record of Black slavery in this country NOT be taught in Florida schools, while also remarking that slavery gave Black men and women useful skills.

Actually, nothing is gained by sanitizing history, obscuring its lessons, hiding the sins and mistakes.  Quoting the historical Jesus:

"You will know the truth and the truth will set you free."  Saint John 8:32

  1. Excellent piece. Continue writing like this. A good priest/pastor/preacher is hard to find.

    1. Despite characterizing myself as a backsliding agnostic, morals are not totally lost on me. I'm much less impressed by so-called men of the cloth than by people who simply try to practice the Golden Rule whether Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu or athiest.

  2. That guy is a con artist! Look him up, he has direct ties to payments made by none other than Mayra Flores. She pays him to be the HQ of her campaign, which is illegal. He’s a scam and has a bad background as well.
