Fifty years ago 85% of our country saw at least some of the Watergate hearings on national TV, convincing most that President Richard Milhous Nixon was very much "a crook," despite his protestations otherwise.
These days, the now-televised congressional hearings on the January 6 insurrection, featuring a blatant attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election, opened to a tepid audience of a mere 20 million.
For nearly half of our electorate, Donald John Trump has poisoned the well, rendering all the investigations into his crimes mere "witchhunts," "election interference," covered and reported by "fake news."
Again and again, interviews with red-hatted MAGA cultists reveal a level of brainwashing even beyond that experienced by worshippers at the People's Temple in Jonestown, Guyana or the "Moonies" who followed and even scheduled their weddings at the whim of Korean con artist Sun Myung Moon as members of the Unification Church.
Public opinion polls show Trump currently even with President Biden or even slightly ahead.
The terrifying prospect of yet another Trump presidency looms large, especially considering his stated intentions to dismantle our nation's intelligence-gathering agencies once re-elected.
Yet, there's some light at the end of this morbid tunnel.
Among the 43% of the electorate who view BOTH Biden and Trump as "too old" to serve as our national leader, 61% say they'll vote for Biden.
Also, there's the hope, based on some statistics, that now-independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. will pull more votes from Trump than Biden.
Trump is absolutely right about one thing; the 2024 presidential election will be the most important one in our nation's history.
