An online headline caught my eye proclaiming that Hispanics were the ethnic group most frequently searched in Texas by law enforcement.
The article, using 2020 stats from the Institute for Statistical Analysis in Criminal Justice, claimed that 39% of those searched by law enforcement in Texas were Hispanic.
Well, that aroused my curiousity about the current demographics for Texas and the 2021 numbers indicate that 39% of searches being conducted of Hispanics is not out of line with those demographics.
2021 Texas Demographics
Hispanics 40.2%
non-Hispanic whites 39.3%
Blacks 11.6%
Asians 5.1%
American, Alaskan Indian 1.5%
So, 40.2 % of Texans are Hispanic and they receive 39% of the searches. That seems about right, doesn't it?
Anyway, if you're concerned about interraction between law enforcement and Hispanics, the McAllen Police Department would like to talk about it over a cup of coffee at McDonald's.
Just coffee? No tortillas?
