FROM "A CHICKEN IN EVERY POT" TO INTERNET IN EVERY HOME~MARTINEZ PANDERS ON THE EVE OF THE ELECTION

pandering:  A manipulative device used by politicians to agree and support the popular view of a particular group or groups of people in order secure their vote.

President Herbert Hoover
During the 1928 presidential election, Republicans promised "a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage" if Herbert Hoover was elected.

Hoover was elected, but, in 1929 the stock market crashed, setting off the "Great Depression."

So much for Hoover's pandering!

Mayor Tony Martinez
Now, Tony Martinez, after being in office eight years, in the last month of the city election, now tantalizes Brownsville with a hint of a promise of citywide internet services.  Notice how the mayor now describes his "vision" for the city:

"This vision includes providing citywide Internet services. This proposal would not only benefit residents but businesses, transportation, law enforcement, health care institutions, and other organizations."

Many of us recall Tony's first promise, his "first priority," eight years ago, to formulate a new ethics code.  Getting that done took Martinez almost eight frickin' years and, it was only done through the effort of newly installed City Attorney Rene DeCoss.

And now, on the eve of this third possible election, Martinez promises citywide internet service?

All together now:  "Give us a break!"

  1. Internet in every home = porn in every home. Russian propaganda in every home. Video game addiction and identity fraud and viruses and security risks in every home. The sad fact, driven home by Trump's election, is that the US population was completely unprepared for the internet, invented only decades ago. Our brains are too gullible, willing to believe ads, conspiracies, the flat earther phenomenon is proof of just how vulnerable we are. This would be a mistake. Kids need parents in every home, not the internet.
