The Myth of McAllen's "Superiority" Over Brownsville

During the Fly Frontera fiasco of several years ago, Mayor Pat Ahumada told the city: "McAllen is eating our lunch."

Indeed, McAllen-Miller International Airport has more flights than the Brownsville-South Padre Island Airport. Both, as airports, are dusty cow pastures, nothing to write home about.

Almost comically, many view McAllen and Brownsville as having some sort of sibling rivalry, while the reality is that Brownsville, actually, is on a plane with Laredo and El Paso in terms of historicity, geography and soul.  McAllen, along with Harlingen, Mission and, even Weslaco, might be favored by Winter Texans, for reasons well known to those Canadian and northern U.S. snowbirds, but, all of those towns are inconsequential, merely in the Brownsville orbit, but not of the same caliber.

A blogger wannabe, likely living in a generous relative's bedroom in McAllen, someone who, for the past year, has sent obscene sexual innuendo to my blog's comment section, sometimes 30 daily, aimed at my wife Nena, has tried lamely to put McAllen over Brownsville.  Jerry McHale posted his recent story to his blog, although, likely, most didn't notice.

Think of historical U.S. cities along our nearest coast; Charleston, New Orleans, Savannah, Richmond.  Are you drawn to those cities because they have a Bass Pro Shop or rich residents from Monterrey, Mexico?  Are you concerned about the total bank deposits in each city before visiting?

Historical cities with history, architecture and soul need not boast about the number of Walmarts within city limits.  Their character is obvious. Residents feel privileged to live there, happily listing their city on the return address.

I felt that way about Seattle and feel that way about Brownsville.

  1. Brownsville is light years out from McAllen in everything, but maybe your right they do not have a old ranch house.

  2. On history, weather, and overall quality of life for the average citizen, McAllen is 5th fiddle to Brownsville. They have us beat on bookstores and that is it. Its medical system exists because of wealthy Mexicans coming in from Monterrey. But even those with real money go to San Antonio aon charter flights, not McAllen. Brownsville is coming along with some interesting projects. Mike is an arrogant prick who has admitted in writing he will bully to get what he wants. He threw everyone he has been working with under the bus to protect his fragile porcelain ego. Mike I will tell you the same thing I told cousin Robert Sanchez, stop financing bloggers who defame people. $60,000 later he understood. You are so stupid because you are driven by your porcelain ego you have announced you are now the deep pockets everyone can sue for all the defamation coming from your three failed journalists.

As to Ben Neece, you allow Jerry to settle you can kiss goodbye elective office. A first year law student can kick Mike's ass in court, why can't you? This is not about defending Jerry it is about defending Brownsville.

You cannot say you believe in downtown Brownsville, and Brownsville, for which i will be the first to give you a lot of credit on downtown, and then allow Jerry your client to remain silent as the Imp and Mike trashing us day in and day out. You need to stand in battle and send Mike back to Dallas, but they way I hear it his business partners, at least some do not want that.

    1. We obviously have different values. Who knew? Enjoy your Starbucks and big box stores in ugly, dusty, inconsequential, irrelevant McAllen.

    2. Seriously Jim, I don't patronize Starbucks when I am in Mcallen. There are plenty of independent coffee shops up there that I support. There are also numerous amazing non chain restaurants. Guess what they don't have? A taco stand on every corner operated by refugees from matamoros. We can agree on the big box stores though. Mcallen has 3 BestBuys! All 3 are bigger than the 1 in brownsville and all have better trained employees. Simply put for your brownsville readers, it takes a hell of an economy in this depressed area to support 3 Best Buy stores. Shall we now compare Christmas Parades and other community activities? How about 2 huge book stores ? They also build hotels 3 or 4 at a time. The New state of the art Theatre compared to the one we have that can't afford to run the air conditioner? McAllen's success over brownsville can be traced back to the great visionary and Mayor Othal Brand. Brownsville is a sad depressed shit stain of a city. Your blog is the best thing happening though. Thanks for that.
