Controversy Swirls Around Justice of the Peace Candidate Erin Hernandez Garcia

by Jim Barton on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 2:55pm

The most heated of the primary races is the Justice of the Peace District 2-2 race involving Erin Hernandez Garcia and Yolanda Begum. The rivalry intensified this week as Ms. Begum posted pictures on the internet of mutilated campaign signs and then later posted pictures of locations from which signs had been removed. There was also some public criticism purportedly from the Hernandez camp criticizing Begum for speaking English with a pronounced Spanish accent.
Respected local blogger Jerry Mchale issued this statement in his blog Brownsville Blues:

"Yolanda Begum is the target of the smear tactics learned from the Hernandez playbook. Hernandez's supporters have been ripping the respected sixty-year-old lady for speaking English with an accent. Begum's signs have also become a target."

Juan Montoya, publisher of the extremely popular El Rrun Rrun blog gave a thorough report of the incidents, adding a list of facts for his readers:

1. Only Begum's signs were destroyed

2. The perp used a sharp instrument like an Exacto knife, a popular tool in graphic businesses

3. Erin Hernandez's sign on her daddy Ernie Hernandez's lawn nearby was undisturbed

4. Ernie and his family cruise through the same route daily to and from work and probably bore the offending Begum signs for at least a few days since they were put up

5. The Hernandez family owns Fiesta Graphics, which is a place of commerce where Exacto knifes are widely used

6. The Hernandez family sees Begum as a credible threat to Erin (and her family's) overweening ambition for political power

7. What do our three readers think?

Our own experience with someone who responds to comments addressed to Erin on this blog has been very informative. Of course, these comments are made anonymously. There is no way to verify that they are actually from Erin Hernandez Garcia, but I will add them here for our readers to make their own determination:

Jim, how stupid can you be. When you decided to start a blog and pretend to know about politics, you should have figured out that Evelon Dale was bad news. Everyone who knows just a hint of valley politics knows that. This is classic Evelon Dale behavior, she knows that Yolanda is in ann uphill battle and she has to do almost anything to show pity on Yolanda's campaign. I have no disrespect for Yolanda, but if you are so quick to point fingers at the Hernandez campaign, and you claim to have witnesses. POST THE VIDEO! The fact of that matter is that you all don't have anything to back up your accusations, otherwise you would have already posted your alleged surveillance.

This is only the latest attempted explanation from a person I believe to be Erin Hernandez, trying to blame Ms. Begum's campaign manager for staging the destruction and removal of campaign signs.
It gets even more interesting:

I think Ms. Begum has more personal enemies than she bargained for. Isn't it true that her late husband was married multiple times before he married Yolanda? Don't be so quick to blame any of your opponnents, those acts could have been done by anybody.

Here, the anonymous writer(I suspect Erin) shifts the blame to the ex-wives of Ms. Begum's deceased husband as possible perpetrators of the sign mutilation and thefts.
Here is a typical comment recommending that only lawyers be permitted to serve in the JP position:

I agree with 11:18 a.m....we must evaluate the candidates and what is required of the position they seek....as for this position...this is a jp court..I mean...it may be the jp court...but they do handle actual cases and evictions....so my question is this....mrs. Begum is an artist...now wants to be a judge. Doesn't make sense to me...another thing that doesn't make sense to me is why the legislature doesn't require the jps to be actual attorneys like the county courts and district courts....it seems to me that the jp should be an attorney or at least someone with a law degree...

Texas Southern University, Erin's alma mater

To be fair, Yolanda Begum is not the only candidate receiving criticism in the campaign. Some have even criticized Erin Hernandez Garcia for seeking her law degree at predominantly black Texas Southern University, as if the notably lower academic standards at the school somehow facilitated Erin's pursuit of a law degree.
It will indeed be an interesting spring!

  2. Are there not other candidates in this race? I tend to agree that this was most likely done by someone other than the Erin Hernandez campaign. One sign is not going to make a difference. Who reported it? Most likely the person responsible. People need to grow up and be mature.
Erin is Erin. Judge her by her own merits. A lawyer is a lawyer and bullshit is bullshit and this ploy reeks.

  3. Right on target! If you want more of the same old shit, vote for another Hernandez. If you want a good Democrat to win this race, vote for Begum.

  4. Mr. Barton, what a derogatory comment you have made about Texas Southern University in this article and others. You sir have lost my total respect. Do you know many lawyers and judges attended this university? Obviously not. I hope and pray that you and Mrs. Barton don't wind up before a judge that attended this University. As for your attacks towards Erin, she, sir, has a degree unlike Mrs. Begum who does not even have an American high school diploma. Shame on you sir.

The article above merely assembles charges and countercharges made by both candidates. None of these charges come from me. I have no idea who mutilated or pilfered Begum's campaign signs and I know nothing of Hernandez-Garcia's academic credentials. I do know that Texas Southern has a great band.

The comment in question originated on BROWNSVILLE VOICE published by Bobby Wightman-Cervantes, although he did not name the school. Jerry Mchale referenced Bobby's comment, but named the school.

As to your insinuation that judges and lawyers educated at Texas Southern University are incapable of objectivity, I'm certain that all but one of them would disagree with you.

  7. Erin has never accomplished much as a lawyer. She barely makes it, a sign that she lacks something......I wouldn't blame the school ( as low ranked as it is, Last...). I would blame poor dummy Erin. It is a stain on the school to have graduated such a piglet......

Erin Hernandez, like all Hernandez, disgusting to look at and even more disgusting on the inside. Go tear up some more of Begum's signs, Erin. It's all she's good at.

  10. Hey don't knock the school down, all lawyers have to pass the bar exam. With that said, who cares where you get your law degree from. It is passing the bar exam that counts. All lawyers have to pass the same exam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Jim all of this alma mater crap on what school Erin went to. WHO THE FUCK CARES. Erin went to law school and gradauted in May of 2006. She passed the bar exam the first time she took it. That tells me a hell of alot more about her. Just look at the information on her website. Now what law school did Ms. Begum attend. Ohh that's right. SHE DIDN'T!!! Where did Ms. Begum attend school. Ohh that's right. SHE BOUNCED AROUND DIFFERENT UNIVERSITIES IN MEXICO. You should really think of something else to attack Erin with because attacking her education when she is the only educated one in that entire slate of candidates makes you look more foolish that you already are. SINCERELY, A TSU GRADUATE...

    Erin,

You need to learn to read more carefully. I've not attacked anyone. This article merely assembles some of the charges and countercharges made in the campaign. None of them originated with me.

  14. Jim, first of all my name is not ERIN. Second, every time someone throws a harsh factual statement at you, you immediately shift the blame to someone else. Do you accept any of the smearing of Erin that you have done? Because just in a quick review of your articles, you obviously don't like Erin and are favoring begum.

    Erin,
I do not consider factual statements as harsh, nor am I smearing you. Nor am I obviously in support of Yolanda Begum. When someone anonymously relates that Ms. Hernandez graduated from Texas Southern in 2006 and passed the bar on her initial try, what bystander would have that information? Only Erin, her brother, folks or Doroteo. No one else cares that much. So, if you're not Erin, you're one of the above, which is fine.

  16. Jim ..like I clearly stated....all one had to do is look at her website....do the math of when she graduated and when she was licensed...does not take a rocket scientist....I have looked at all candidate websites to get to known the truth of all candidates in all races...I dont take anything serious in the local blogs....the blogs have only proven to be biased and uncredible...

    Erin,

My point is that even if it is possible to deduce from your website information that you graduated from TSU in 2006 and passed the bar on your first try, the fact is that no one would CARE enough to point this out except you or possibly another close relative with a vested interest in your election. BTW, I don't find much of what candidates say about themselves as credible.

  18. Jim, what is up with the Begum camp getting someone to run Republican against Linda Salazar? Do they think that some kind of distraction is going to work to get an unqualified candidate elected to JP2-2?
