Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Vice President J.D. Vance have been representing our country in Europe the last few days, with both young men receiving an underwhelming reception.

"Not ready for prime time" is the phrase that comes to mind, although a journalist called the duo "Rookies of the Year."

Defense Secretary Hegseth, who visited NATO headquarters in Brussels, before going to Germany, and Poland, gave a speech saying that Ukraine should give up territory to Russia and should not be a member of NATO, a statement that did not sit with European leaders.

Senator Roger Wickers, R, Mississippi, said Hegseth "made a rookie mistake in Brussels.”

Wicker described Mr. Hegseth’s public remarks as a diplomatic misstep born of inexperience, saying that it is common knowledge that officials should not “say before your first meeting what you will agree to and what you won’t.”

“I don’t know who wrote the speech,” Wicker said. “It is the kind of thing Tucker Carlson could have written — and Carlson is a fool.”

Vice President J.D. Vance didn't fare much better, visiting a security conference in Munich, only to say he was more worried about the fading of democracy in Europe than he was about Russia or China, then chose not to visit with the German chancellor, instead talking with Alice Weidel of the far right AfD party, the same neo-Nazi group Elon Musk consulted with in his visit to Germany.

These are strange times and America is not getting competent representation with these unqualified Trump appointees.
