In perhaps one of his final articles written in support of outgoing Cameron County Tax Collector/Assessor Tony Yzaguirre, Juan Montoya of El Rrun Rrun tells us that state and local officials had "championed" Mr. Yzaguirre's efforts to amend the Homestead Exemption for county taxpayers.
"In the past 10 months alone since the passage of Senate Bill 2, our office has issued over $15M in refunds in Cameron County," Yzaguirre is quoted as saying.
Just to be clear about Yzaguirre's role in all this, it was the Texas Senate that upped the Homestead Exemption from $40,000 to $100,000. Yzaguirre's role was simply to suggest that Homestead Exemptions be initiated at the time of closing, requiring title companies include that in their paperwork.
The current Democratic candidate for tax assessor/collector, Eddie Garcia, feels somewhat flattered by these adjustments as educating the taxpayers about the various tax exemptions available has been part of his platform since Day One.
Montoya also warns Garcia not to "overturn recognized efficient operations" or "make wholesale personnel changes," acting unaware of Garcia's promise to not do that, including members of the Yzaguirre family employed in that office.
Garcia, as an experienced administrator, wants to simply set a tone for the office that will be reflected in the service given to the citizenry.
After a 6 year stint in the U.S. Air Force, Garcia worked 32 years for the Brownsville Police Department, including 20 years leading the Brownsville City Employees Credit Union and 4 years on the BISD board.
When asked how county tax assessing and collecting would be different under his leadership, Garcia's answer was short: "Customer service."
"My emphasis will not be just Brownsville, but improving service in all of Cameron County," Garcia said at a recent event.
Election Day is Tuesday, November 5.
Eddie is good at gaslighting. Yesterday a friend went in to change title on a car. He was in and out in 10 minutes. He said there were two people ahead of him. how is that slow. He needs to go back today for another document. They told him to be prepared for the end of the month rush which lasts until the first few days of November. This is nature and Eddie is just playing everyone when he says he can make it faster. When did Eddie recommend tax forms be offered at closing. I'm not sure this Bill will pass because it may require the title company give legal advice. A lot of people do not qualify. Also, what is so wrong with Tony's office helping people get $15 million in refunds.
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing wrong with Yzaguirre refunding tax overpayments.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, this tells me two things. 1. It was time for a change away from Tony! 2. Eddie at the next election is super beatable
