"One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much." Luke 16:10,  English Standard Version

Ruben Cortez
The Texas Ethics Commission has grown weary of Ruben Cortez, fining him $10,000, with a fast track for payment, for repeated Campaign Finance Report violations including third grade mathematical errors, missing reports and failing to even acknowledge the TEC's sworn complaints.

It's not forgetfulness, but simply arrogance, as the young man grew up around politics and knows the basic requirements to run for office.

The math errors and "shortfalls" on reporting campaign contributions can't be attributed to math inadequacy as Cortez obtained his G.E.D., General Educational Development Certificate, some years ago.

Cortez's deficiency is not mathematical, but ethical.  He has no desire to play by the rules.

That's scary, especially considering the principle clearly stated by the historical Jesus above; that a person dishonest in little things will also be dishonest in much more substantial matters. (Google insurance bid-rigging, Ruben Cortez)

The Texas House of Representatives, District 37, dodged a bullet.

  1. He is finally going to pay for years of bad conduct. His mother is facing a judicial complaint for giving campaign gifts to a jury. But the real good news is CNN is reporting the Supreme Court authorized the government to order google and others to take down misleading posts. What is going to happen to the local bought and paid for blogs. Just because they report the truth on occasion, does not excuse their bought and paid for lies. Also, the TEC has ordered if the bloggers are paid by candidates they must report it. The two bought and paid for blogs will rightfully go after Cortez, but then accuse anyone who reports them to the TEC, as hatchet men for those who are being defamed by the bloggers.

  2. Brownsville has smart people with ethics. (Intelligence is a prerequisite for chess championships.) Those willing to actually run for office in our town include the unscrupulous, ethically-challenged like Ruben Cortez or the silly, dimwitted like Minerva Pena. I agree that the prospect of running the gauntlet of our town's two politiquero bloggers, who trash candidates who don't "pay up," discourages qualified, ethical candidates from running for office.

    1. Anyone who pays them should be disqualified by the voters.

    2. Yes. That's why accurate campaign finance reports required by law is critical to voters having the information they need to make correct choices. If a politiquero blogger is being paid to trash opponents, voters need to know that.
