Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds (on the right) |
Iowa's Republican Governor Kim Reynolds (pictured above with a close friend) has announced that her state will not be participating in the USDA Summer EBT program.
That program gives families living beneath the poverty line $40 per child per month to cover help with food costs during the summer months they're not receiving a school lunch.
Actually, the costs to the individual states is very minimal, only 1/2 of the administrative costs to run the program, $2.2 M for Iowa.
Coincidentally, $2M is what Governor Reynolds spent on a publicity stunt this August, sending 109 soldiers from the Iowa National Guard to support Texas Governor Greg Abbott's Operation Lone Star to "help secure the southern border."
To combat criticism of her decision, Iowa's Governor Reynolds now claims that the USDA Summer EBT program "does nothing to promote nutrition at a time when child obesity has become epidemic."
That thinking coincides with a Republican effort during Iowa's 2023 legislative session to prevent SNAP participants from purchasing fresh meat, bagged salads and sliced cheese.
While readers of this blog may have noticed that I consider Texas Governor Greg Abbott to be a self-righteous, imitation Christian, I take no comfort in the fact that Iowa's governor is equally one.
