From the third floor banister of my apartment, I watched the 3rd quarter of the Corpus Christi Miller-Brownsville Veterans football game next to a couple young men, possibly college age.
The score was already 14-0 Buccaneers with the Chargers kicking off to start the second half.
The two players receiving for the Buccanneers were Holmes and somebody else, prompting a totally racist statement by me to the young men standing next to me: "Don't kick it off to Holmes as he's probably a Black guy who'll run it back for a touchdown.
Sure enough, ten or 11 seconds later, Holmes had run it back for a touchdown.
But the Chargers weren't intimidated, manifesting "no quit" as they marched systematically down the field to score, making it 21-7.
Responding with another drive of their own, mixing running and passing nicely, the Buccanneers put themselves in position to score with a pass play into the end zone the three of us from the banister saw clearly pop out of the hands of the receiver.
Four fat referees totally missed the call, even though it appeared in a replay on the huge scoreboard to a thunderous chorus of "boos" from the Chargers seating section.
So, at the end of 3 quarters it was an illegitimate 28-7 Buccanneers and I went home to my apartment.
But, I left too soon!!!
Oh damn! My son was right!!! It was indeed Veterans over CC Miller 35- 28 with a tremendous fourth quarter comeback!!!!
Likely the biggest day in Brownsville football history!!!!
Now, at last, maybe we will quit hearing about Coach Joe's "historic" victory decades ago.
ReplyDeleteSo wonderful to watch the game from your own space.
