Suspended Israeli Cabinet Minister Amihai Eliyahu

Israeli cabinet minister Amihai Eliyahu was suspended yesterday for radio remarks suggesting his country might resort to nuclear weapons in their retaliation against Hamas in the Gaza strip.

One of the problems with Eliyahu's comment is that Israel has never publicly acknowledged even having nuclear weapons, although that fact seems common knowledge among the world's leaders.

Also, launching such weaponry in Gaza would actually endanger Israel, considering the proximity of the two areas.

Now, should the battle escalate into a regional conflict as many suspect it will, all bets are off.

In suspending Eliyahu from Israel's cabinet "until further notice," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued this statement:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

"Eliyahu's
statements are not based in reality. Israel and the IDF(military) are operating in accordance with the highest standards of international law to avoid harming innocents.  We will continue to do so until our victory."

Eliyahu, the suspended cabinet member, responded to the Prime Minister's statement:

"It is clear to anyone who is sensible that the nuclear remark was metaphorical."

Hamas health ministry claims that 9,500 have been killed so far in the war.
