From the editor:  Our story featuring BISD Trustee Minerva Pena's suggested renaming of Sams Memorial Stadium "Joe Rod Stadium" prompted some responses.

One reader claimed via email that the renaming can't be done:

"Jim,  As to Minerva's proposal to rename Sams Stadium, the naming is already under contract to the Earl Sams Foundation, so that can't be done legally."

Another reader sent us a list of the salaries of all the football coaches in the Rio Grande Valley, a list dated November 7, 2017.  Singled out was unsuccessful Brownsville Rivera Coach Tom Chavez:

"Longtime head football coach Tom Chavez is the highest paid coach in South Texas with a salary of $115,410 at District 32-6A Brownsville Rivera. The Raiders have gone 2-27 in the past three seasons."

Now, as to the scoreboard itself, that was a $1.4M project ramrodded through the BISD Board of Trustees by the late Joe Rodriguez.

This blog ran a few articles back in 2017-18 about those shenanigans, although the bulk of that reporting was on Juan Montoya's "El Rrun Rrun."
