Reading Brownsville's blogs might leave one with the impression that our city is a political town, but it's not.
A barricade set up on Central Blvd to ask the question "Who's the mayor of Brownsville?" would find that possibly one in twenty would know the answer.
This is a city where, on average, 91% of registered voters DO NOT VOTE, instead prioritizing making a living, sending kids to school, even buying a house.
So, candidates spend a couple hundred bucks or so with the elections office getting a list of registered voters, but then focusing only on those who actually vote, the cherished "likely voters."
Why do so many register to vote in Brownsville, then never vote? Well, if you were born in Mexico and when you tried to register your car were asked if you'd like to register to vote, how would you respond?
"Oh, si seΓ±or!"
You attach the plates and go about your life, not even realizing perhaps you're now a "registered voter."
Anyway, identifying and targeting likely voters is the biggest aspect of Brownsville politics and local political candidates turn to one man, the perennial winner in all of the city's political races, Rodrigo Moreno-Fernandez of Pink Ape Media.
Pink Ape Media is big business in Brownsville with three winning candidates in 2019, Trey Mendez, Nurith Galosky and John Cowen spending $138,347,67 in the PRIMARY alone that year with Rodrigo's company.
Rodrigo Moreno, born in Mexico, has also been involved in producing, writing and directing films such as "Ramona," "The Whole," "The Myth of Mather," and a TV series, "The Border Zone," receiving the Best First Time Director Award from the London IFA in 2017.
You may or may not know that Moreno was also connected with a sting operation netting the conviction of BISD Trustee Sylvia Atkinson when she willingly accepted a $10,000 bribe to use her influence to peddle a supposed Indian film project worth millions.
It's even possible that the clever Moreno also parlayed his involvement in that law enforcement scenario to gain citizenship, but I don't know if that's true.
There may be other political operatives in Brownsville, like Matamoros attorney Jerry Danache, who play a minor role in promoting candidates, but, far and away, Rodrigo Moreno-Fernandez is the consistent leader in Brownsville's political clubhouse.
In almost every political race run in our city, Rodrigo should be declared the actual winner.
juan montoya had this story months ago.
ReplyDeleteI've done about seven or eight stories on Moreno since 2011. It's not exactly breaking news, just an ongoing point of interest. If you stay alert around McAllen you'll find stories of interest to develop.
DeleteIt is important that you tell/write these stories....people forget. This Rodrigo Moreno is an opportunist.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Actually, it baffles me that local candidates spend so much money for a non-paying position, but we all know the answer to that question.
DeleteMontoya is an extortionist, Denache is old news/his hey-day is way past him, Moreno is a combo of the two, just a way more expensive extortionist. Truth of the matter, a candidate doesn't need any of these guys to win, there is way longer list of winners that didn't utilize any of these con-artist. What is their secret sauce? They don't have one, they just pretend like they do, they use the same list that everyone has access to!
