MORMONS TRYING TO RECRUIT BROWNSVILLE OBSERVER EDITOR

Nathan Lamborn

Am I the only one getting friend requests from young Mormon missionaries?

Last week two young men pictured in white shirts with black ties issued me Facebook friendship requests.

Today, another young man, Nathan Lamborn, did the same.

Has the pandemic forced Mormon bicycles off the streets necessitating young Mormon men do their proselytizing on social media?

If that is the case, let it be known that the Barton household is not fertile ground for religious solicitation.

Any attempt to convert me to Mormonism or any other religious belief system would constitute "casting pearls before swine."

Polygamy does not appeal as I can barely afford or satisfy one wife.

Yet, I went to school with Mormon kids in the eighth grade in Idaho.  They're good people and take care of their own via networking.

I'm no Dennis Rodman, who seemed to have trouble playing in front of the hostile Utah Jazz crowd in 1998:

Rodman in final game against Utah in 1998

"It’s difficult to get in sync because of all the fuckin' Mormons out here. And you can quote me on that.  The people were giving me the finger and things like that.

Maybe I don't know some of the Mormon people. The Mormon people don't like me, either, right? That's a given, right? So, what the hell."

After being fined $50,000 by the NBA for his remarks, the colorful basketball player, after several tries, finally softened his words a little, saying:

"I ain't got nothing against no ethnicity and Utah is a good city."

  1. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints does not practice polygamy. Please get your facts straight.

  2. You are technically correct. Mormons stopped "practicing" polygamy in 1890 as it was interfering with their acceptance into the mainstream. But, they've never renounced the belief that God allows polygamy.

You may remember a case here in Texas where the leader of a fundamental sect of the Mormon Church was arrested for having several very under age wives.

Church members were forbidden from having sex as long as their leader was incarcerated and not permitted conjugal visits.

  3. Your inclusion of Dennis Rodman is racist! Why include him???

Shit, have your say and be done with it.

  4. It's easy. Anybody that disagrees with you just call them racist. Facts don't matter. That the Democratic party way when you give them facts.

  5. Dennis Rodman can't be racist. He's black so he can't be racist. Only white people are racist. They oppress all black people and minorities. That's why minorities can't succeed. The minorities that do succeed it's because they think they're white. Everytime I failed in school or I got fired from a job it's because of racism. That's why I vote Democrat.

    1. While trying to impersonate your perception of an "ignorant Democrat," you accomplish little.

In my 73 years, I've witnessed white racism to be sure, but, also black and Hispanic prejudice.

As someone who lived in the black community for ten years in Little Rock, attending an all-black church, I saw beautiful lighter-skinned black women completely ostracized and hated by their darker African-American sisters.

Racism is not exclusively a white disease, but 400 years of institutionally-supported slavery is undeniably part of our country's history.

Your tongue-in-cheek approach to the subject of racism is clever, but it's not particularly funny to someone who's lived through several shades of this evil.

  6. All minorities are oppressed. Listen to the Democrats. Even Lebron James is oppressed and Democrats buy into that shit. 400 years of slavery...No mames Barton. Who is a slave in this country Jim? Tell me.

  7. If you're a deadbeat and a minority blame it on racism. Being successful is to hard and a lot of work. Blaming your failures on racism is easy and makes you the victim.
