CORONAVIRUS GETS SERIOUS AGAIN AS BISD CONSIDERS MASK MANDATE

A reader, responding to our article on Governor Abbott's ban of mask mandates, wants to make masks simply a personal choice issue.

Posted below is the reader's statement followed by my response:

Abbott is giving YOU a choice. You can still wear a mask if you want they just can't force you. I can make my own decisions for myself and my family. Some people can't and don't want to.

  1. I'm certain that sounds logical and fair to you, but what you're overlooking is the tremendous risk of the unmasked spreading variants of this virus and infecting many more. This is not a personal liberty issue as much as it is a global health issue. This is a serious pandemic not a time for political posturing.

  2. The Delta variant is spreading rapidly in Cameron County with "nearly 100% of hospitalizations being unvaccinated."

  3. So, for those who want to politicize mask wearing as simply a personal issue, we ask:  Do you have the right to spread this virus in its so far most contagious form, the Delta variant, to your neighbors and family?

  4. While 94% of Cameron County residents ages 50 to 64 are vaccinated, only 41% of those ages 12-15 are.

  5. Reportedly, a vaccine won't be available for those under 12 until at least November.

  6. Are you parents of unvaccinated school children 11 and under comfortable with your young ones going to school in a mask optional environment?

  7. The BISD Board of Trustees is meeting Thursday at 3PM to consider a mask mandate in defiance of Governor Abbott to be sure, but primarily to protect students, teachers and employees.

  8. Dallas and Austin ISD's have approved mask mandates with Houston next.

  9. Just this morning I received this note from Bill Berg:

  10. Have a great week.  Stay safe. Wear a mask when asked. Careful vaccinated  people I know became ill with the Delta variant.  They are recovering, but were contagious until they had symptoms and were tested. Our vaccinated friends can transmit Delta to vaccinated us.

  11. As many of you know, I have two grandsons living in Brownsville, ages 11 and 8, and I'm worried about their safety.

  12. The coronavirus pandemic, its threat once seemingly on the decline, has come roaring back.

  13. Protect yourselves, your kids and grandkids.
