A Carlos Cascos for county judge get-together at Southwinds Lounge, likely not on the original schedule, but organized in a single day, brought the faithful together Thursday evening to once again hear the former Secretary of State preach the gospel of "voting for the candidate, not the party."
The hastily-arranged meet may be in response to a couple of dark clouds on the horizon; incumbent Eddie Trevino, Jr. "spending 2-1/2 times" what Cascos is spending in the race and the possibility of a Beto-infused Blue Wave putting up Democrat numbers Cascos can't overcome by sheer will and supporter fervor.
Cascos reinforces his image as "a loner," by standing on street corners in Harlingen and Brownsville, holding a campaign sign, but the image is not accurate.
Charismatic Chris Valadez, Cascos' longtime assistant, provides an almost perfect counterbalance for his straight-laced, but sometimes stiff boss. Valadez, always comedic, but usually serious, takes the hit for anything foolish, while jealously protecting his boss's image.
Behind the scenes, people like Maggie Ozuna work tirelessly, while County Chair Morgan Cisneros Graham would seemingly take a bullet for her county party's standard-bearer.
As for me, I drank two Republican Bud Lights while reminiscing with Jerry McHale, Chris Valadez, longtime newsman Bill Young and Matamoros/Brownsville businessman Alex Guerrero.
Young and I particularly bonded and he said he'd forgotten how much fun these events could be.
Valadez, as he left, gave me a bear hug, calling me "that pony-tailed puto."
Hardworking or hardly working?
ReplyDeleteYou call Valadez "charismatic" and he calls you "that pony-tailed puto". Barton, I do believe you have finally been accepted into the brotherhood. That sort of intimate compliment is usually reserved for a longtime friend, who usually comes back with something witty like, "hey compadre, you weren't complaining last night when you were riding me and pulling on my pony tail". Welcome to the lodge. Meetings on Tuesday night. Bring a dish.
ReplyDeleteThere goes that slug again. Crashing every event and making it a photo op for himself.
ReplyDeleteHis constant actions remind me of a quote by Margaret Thatcher — 'Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren't.'
Cascos supported the Texas party leaders and they support Trump. Ergo, Cascos supported Trump. What else do you need to know?
ReplyDeleteHmm, using that logic, villalobos, limas, cantu are in prison for corruption while in office. Trevino accused in court of giving limas a $1,000 to be given a case by limas All are democrats. You must be a democrat. Ergo? What else do you need to know?
DeleteCascos isn’t the party’s standard bearer. Ever heard of MAGA, puto?
ReplyDelete"her county party's standard-bearer." That's phrase I used to refer to Cascos. Did you notice the word "county?" And, yes, dumbass, I've heard of "MAGA." It's a slogan used by an incompetent buffoon currently occupying the oval office and also by his intellectual equal, Kanye West.
DeleteIt’s not Cascos. It’s Trump. Absolute spin job.
ReplyDeleteValadez is one of the problems I have when deciding to vote for Cascos or his opponent. Why Cascos chooses to be associated with such a foul mouthed degenerate I will ever understand.
ReplyDeleteYea, but given a choice between a foul mouthed person, which costs taxpayers nothing or someone that attempted to pay himself a $100,000 for being mayor, or attempting to bribe a district judge(limas) or using his position to enrich himself, the choice is easy, at least for me.
ReplyDeleteIf Cascos is with EC.... my vote is for E. Treviรฑo
