CARLOS CASCOS CLARIFIES POSITION ON WEST RAIL ROAD/BIKE TRAIL/PROMENADE

I have been asked to state my position on the 8 mile, 100 ft wide, abandoned right of way (ROW) known as the West Loop/Hike & Bike trail in Brownsville. There are various stakeholders such as Cameron County, City of Brownsville, Texas Department of Transportation, land owners, developers & hike & bike enthusiasts to name a few, that I trust will come together with a viable plan & compromise.

I will advocate for a creation of an advisory committee made up of the stakeholders listed above to arrive at a comprehensive, best usage plan that will benefit our community as a whole utilizing all current available information.

Based on the information I currently have, Cameron County is the owner of the property in question, and in the driver's seat.
When this project began years ago, I supported a Palm Blvd. type thoroughfare, along with a hike & bike trail. Palm Blvd. in Brownsville is approximately 60 ft wide, curb to curb allowiing for 4 lanes, plus a 6 ft to 8 ft wide landscaped median.

The stakeholders mentioned above have differing viewpoints & it appears that some, not all, of the stakeholders have reached a compromise in principal. That compromise being a hike & bike trail only between B&M Bridge & FM 802 (6 miles), the ROW between Morrison & Alton Gloor (1 mile) converted into a road, with developers donating 30 ft of ROW, of which, 60 ft is road & 70 ft is hike & bike trail. There is 1 mile left which what to do with, is up in the air.

Based on the limited information I have & subject to the recommendations of the yet to be created advisory committee, I still believe a Palm Blvd type thoroughfare along the 8 mile stretch works for all, however, if that is not acceptable to a majority of the stakeholders, I would support the compromise or a variation thereof as outlined above.

I will work hard with the stakeholders to arrive at a plan that best works for all. I will not mislead anyone simply to get elected. I will remain accessible, transparent & upfront with everyone. Thanks.

  1. Sure, Carlos. Until the governor of Tamaulipas calls to name him secretary of state.

  2. Another bike and hike trail, in which no one will used, unless you the COB must pay people on bikes to come and used it. What a waste of money. COB has already too many bike and hike trails but no one used them. COB need roads to move the traffic, which is currently a mess.

    1. Thanks for the reminder of why I won't vote for Erasmo. I'd forgotten how much he hates exercise and bikes. Had been weighing him vs Otis, but clearly my vote will go to Otis Powers now.
