"Has the dictionary taken over my school?" grandson Jack wanted to know.
Not exactly. But, alphabetizing remains a critical skill in the 21st century. Encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauruses, phone books and doctor lists can only be navigated by someone who understands the concept.
All I'm asking in this assignment is to locate the entry word, using the guide words in the upper left and right of the page, then write the definition.
Of course, words can be Googled for their meaning, pronunciation and part of speech if you can come close to spelling them or speak them into your cell phone. But, a hardcover dictionary is not yet obsolete.
Cursive handwriting may be on the way out. It might be more useful for first graders to be taught keyboard, as many, like Jack, seem to be relying on their thumbs as in text messaging.
