Pat Ahumada's Easter Greeting to Brownsville Voters

From the editor:  We received the Easter Greeting published below at 10:45 AM from mayoral candidate, former Mayor Pat Ahumada.  It was sent via Sprint Wireless# (956)572-8172.

This "greeting," is actually a political advertisement that appeared in Sunday's Brownsville Herald.

Perhaps, even more interesting is the personal addendum below the  ad, signed "Pat Ahumada," that accompanied the SMS.  In that note Pat reveals that, just his like mayoral opponent, Erasmo Castro, Pat is a preacher's boy.  Ahumada also shares his belief in the "after life," "heaven" and "hell," while reaching out to "none"(sic) Christians.

Ahumada's personal message:

"No matter what religion or faith you believe in, Christians and none Christians believe for the most part in a after life and agree on wishing all a safe journey as we prepare for the after life. I wish all my fellow man a Christian blessing knowing that we all have choices to make that assures an after life in heaven or in a place we call Hell. This day gives us hope and the assurance that there is a rebirth and an everlasting life for those that believe and have faith. Happy Easter!

Pat Ahumada"

obvious symbols of fertility
I've described myself in the past as a "backsliding agnostic," which is a silly way of saying I don't know anything for certain, do not consider myself spiritual, certainly not religious.  I see design in the eye, reproduction, the atmosphere, the coexistence of animal and plant life, so that it would seem presumptuous to categorically rule out a creator, designer or general contractor for the universe.

Easter, the holiday most in Brownsville celebrate today, is said to have originated with the worship of a fertility goddess, Eostre.  Others feel it started a couple thousand years earlier with another fertility goddess, Ashtoreth.  Celebrating Ashtoreth is condemned in the Bible book of 1 Kings.  Some of Solomon's many wives got the King in trouble with God for sacrificing to Ashtoreth.

Colored eggs and bunny rabbits are obvious fertility or reproduction symbols.  The celebration of Easter is evidence that Christianity, especially the nominal forms of it, is a homogenized religion, containing elements of many belief systems.  Even today, some puritanical groups try to reintroduce primitive Christianity without all the paganisms incorporated over several centuries.

Ahumada also mentioned his belief in the "after life," separating the word afterlife into two words.  Again, that concept seems almost universal in many cultures, Christian or not.

Bishop Daniel Flores

At least three theories come to mind supporting the belief in an afterlife; resurrection, reincarnation or simply, a soul that lives on after the body dies.

Country singer Willie Nelson believes reincarnation is "the only logical belief," although he doesn't think humans reincarnate into frogs, cows or cockroaches, just other humans.

The former Saul of Tarsus, who became the Apostle Paul, believes that the Resurrected Jesus appeared to him on a highway after his death, proving that he'd been resurrected or brought back from the dead.

Pastor Brad Burke
Others believe that something exists inside the body, called a soul, that retains your memory and personality and floats off to heaven after the body dies. Of course, the soul could descend to the less desirable place Pat mentioned, where Satan the Devil, acting as sort of prison warden, employed by God, tortures them throughout eternity for not listening to God much as Satan himself didn't.  Lol!

I don't know if any of the above theories are true or untrue, although I'm certain Pastor Brad Burke or  Bishop Daniel Flores could adjust my thinking.

    1. Not speaking for Jim, but I noticed several points:
Ahumada is using religion to get votes.
Easter is not an exclusively Christian holiday.
We all have our beliefs, but who knows for sure?

  2. He wished everyone a happy easter and is "using them to get votes" wow how ridiculous.

    1. It's a political ad paid for by the Pat4Mayor Campaign. It reminds the voters that Pat is a Christian and introduced prayer into City Commission meetings. Pat is not criticized or applauded in the article.

  6. Among the parrot- what -the priest- says Brownsville mentality... sorry when I want a holy viewpoint I don't aim my sights toward a closet gay priest who may or may not have molested pre pubescent boys while proclaiming his holy ability to resist the temptations of the nuns. I mean, obviously, you are gay dude. That taints everything you say and interpret from Scripture. The nuns are more clean than you. How many assholes have the nuns penetrated I would guess at 0-10..... how many assholes have the priests penetrated? That would number in the 1,000,000's.... yeah I'll take my communion from a nun over a priest any day that's right dudes, you don't fool me. What attracted you to the priesthood anyway? The ability to be gay anus lovers and yet powerful and yet morally condescending towards others yep just like Bobby wants to be its all about power. Fake. I'll worship Eostara over you fag losers every Easter / Eostara!!

  7. By being critical of such ad, the assumption is that newspaper readers are not capable of making up their own minds when they vote. If he PAID for the ad and the newspaper is a private entity, he can run he is an atheist and have the atheists vote for him (or not). Some of us read your blog, Mr. Montoya's or Mr. BWC, sometimes even the trash that McHale writes, but, at the end of the line what really counts is how many of us actually GO and VOTE, have our own opinion about the actions of these individuals (bloggers included) and if we end up making another mistake (like the last one with our current mayor), we will end up paying for it with another term of these people in office. I am not defending Mr. Ahumada, I dont even know him; the few times I've seen him in person, he comes across as an arrogant individual, but then you have individuals that come across as nice and kind and are nothing more than a disguise. Everytime I read something negative about this man, the 20,000 dlls check comes up, what about the monetary waste that the current administration has done? How many times those 20,000 have been wasted not in one check but in several sales? Why dont the republican and democratic parties work together at a local level and present a forum with ALL candidates to present their platforms? Mayble because they dont have a platform? Let Pat Ahumada, Rick, Jessica place all their ads they want to. That DOESNT MEAN the voter believes them, wants them or will vote for them. Each individual has his/her own mind and as american citizens and registered voters, it is up to them to exercise that right in the voting booth no matter how many "convincing" ads come out in newspapers or tv.

  9. Pat also said Happy Charro Days but I don't remember anyone saying anything about that. So I don't understand the uproar, to wish a city and those who believe in the Christian Faith a Happy Easter isn't a bad thing and if you're not Christian then it's no big deal, just have a good day. What next, no Mayor's toys for tots drive, ridiculous. Don't like the dude that's ok but to make a big deal is ridiculous.
