From the editor: This past weekend this blog reported a dilapidated property at 1205 E. Jackson that posed a severe health and nuisance hazard to the community. Not only had the roof fallen in after years of neglect, but the floors wreaked of urine, also being covered in human excrement and debris.
The doors had fallen over leaving a clear path for area children, vagrants and the homeless. Gang graffiti covered the brick walls.
The property, once known as El Tucan Sports Bar, was purchased by Tony Martinez almost 8 years ago, September 21, 2006, through a corporation DBA TM Valley Enterprises, Inc., which lists its office as 1206 E. Van Buren, the address of Tony Martinez' law office.
On Wednesday, two workers with a chain saw and weed eater were observed clearing the property. The mature evergreen shrubs along Jackson Street were pruned to the ground as were several trees on the property. All of the brush was carefully piled in the alley waiting on Brownsville's brush crew to be notified of the necessary pick-up by District 4 City Commissioner John Villarreal. Hurricane season, that began June 1, makes that pick-up even more imperative.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad this crap was cleaned up. On another matter, Jim, what is your take on the pros and cons of Cyclobia and the money that is spent continuously on promoting this event
ReplyDeleteOn one recent Night Cyclobia the BCIC spent $14,162, so if we have 4 per year, that approaches $60,000. The event is essentially a paid for photo-op, not spontaneous in any sense or even demanded. While cycling is beneficial exercise and, for many, necessary transportation, the Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation worships the Bike God when you consider how much of their effort is devoted to bicycle events, trails and advertising.
