Has Indecisive Tony Martinez Abandoned Plans for a Downtown Office Yet A Second Time?

The Screen Channel 12, Brownsville TV, Viewers Saw While the City Commission was in Executive Session for 40 Minutes 4/24/2014

We've chronicled Tony Martinez lust, craving, obsession with having a mayoral office downtown. Long before a couple city commissioners noticed Tony had been dipping into the AEP Texas Settlement Fund for items on his wish list, we reported his lease and refurbishing with taxpayer money the space at 1101-A East Washington Street for a downtown mayoral office.

City crews, with as many as four trucks outside, worked on the office night, day and weekends, while Tony furnished the office himself according to the Public Information Request we received from the city. Likely embarrassed by our reports, the mayor "gifted" the office to the city's planning department, naming it the Downtown Revitalization Information Office.  The office has been used as many as three times since the taxpayers started paying the lease October 8, 2013.

Next, the mayor turned his attention to three small properties, clustered together on E. 11th Street, 609, 611 and 615. Two of those cubicles had been purchased during the mayor's irrational buying spree of speculative real estate two years ago, the third more recently out of AEP Texas Settlement Funds. After the mayor changed his mind on using 1101-A E. Washington as a mayoral office, a sign was posted on the window of 615 E. 11th that read:  "Currently behing rehabilitated and partially restored to become the Brownsville Police Department downtown mini-station and The City of Brownsville central Mayor's office.

Listening carefully to interim City Planner Ramiro Gonzalez' words last night at the special City Commission meeting(4/24/2014), the mayor has changed his mind again.  Ramiro said:  "The three small buildings, 609, 611 and 615 E. 11th will become the new Brownsville Police Department Substation and Community Meeting Room.  While the sign declaring these properties would become the police substation and "downtown central Mayor's office" has been removed for several weeks, Ramiro's statement was the first indication that the mayor had changed his mind once again on a downtown mayoral office.

A Community Meeting Room, especially containing clean bathrooms, might make more sense for downtown.  It's not like citizens would have been able to drop into the central mayoral office to chat with a hardworking, approachable city administrator.  The mayor would simply never have been in his office.  It would have become a pretend office, like the Downtown Brownsville Revitalization Information Office.

Two votes were taken Thursday night.  Three City Commissioners and the Mayor voted for some type of convention center discussed in executive session.  City Commissioners Longoria and Villarreal voted against it.

As for the other item, putting city-owned properties up for sale on the Rio South Texas website, that was approved with properties listed green(for sale), red(not for sale) and yellow(with unanswered questions).

La Casa del Nylon, at 1305 Adams St., purchased for $2,300,000 in a deal unethically and inappropriately negotiated by Tony's law partner, Horacio Barrera, from Abraham Galonsky, was labeled "yellow."
Pastor Brad Burke prayed that the Mayor and City Commissioners be
"unselfish" and "resist temptation."  After the prayer, Burke announced
a non-denominational meeting to "pray for our city, country and state"
at Sam's Stadium May 1.

  1. I told you the "La Casa del Nylon" is the center piece of new headquarters, administrative offices for the UTRGV. That is why it is coded yellow. Or, will it be the corporate offices for Space X? This kind of Grade A office space is in constant demand. Should both of the above deals fall through, I understand Flea Market, S. A. de C. V., has an option on a 99 year lease.

  2. Sure looks like the furver to collect property for Julieta and UT-System has gone away; likely because Brownsville will get the "hind tit" or left overs of the new UT-RGV and apparently Julieta has given up the fight to be queen. Tony, her "dupe" (or the citizens) now are left holding the bag containing worthless property which no one will buy at the prices the tax payer paid. My guess is that 'Da Mayor just wants his term to be over so he can return to his "little" world. Tony has been worthless to us, but he has paid his debt to Julieta and her world of elitists here in Brownsville. We have to wonder why groups keep giving her honors, when she has always put herself and her "career" ahead of the public. She used the support of the Kardenas Klan to take tax dollars even without a TSC Board vote. I think BISD should re-name the Garcia middle school to recognize someone who has actually given something to the community.....not continue to have the name of a narcissistic bitch above its front door. Let's hope Julieta is "done" and if not, let's hope her new job will be out of the valley.

  4. LOOSER Julieta reminds of another LOOSER:
Pete Wehner, Commentary Magazine, "Obama’s Staggering Record of Failure." ... "It’s not simply that Mr. Obama has fallen short of what he promised; it’s that he has been, in so many respects, a failure. Choose your metrics. Better yet, choose Mr. Obama’s metrics: Job creation." Failure. "Economic growth." Failure. "Improving our health-care system." Failure. "Reducing the debt." Failure. "Reducing poverty." Failure. "Reducing income inequality." Failure. "Slowing the rise of the oceans." Failure. "Healing the planet." Failure. "Repairing the world." Failure. "The Russian 'reset.'" Failure. "Peace in the Middle East." Failure. "Red lines in Syria." Failure. "Renewed focus on Afghanistan." Failure. "A new beginning with the Arab world." Failure. "Better relations with our allies." Failure. "Depolarizing our politics." Big failure. "Putting an end to the type of politics that 'breeds division and conflict and cynicism.'" Failure. "Working with the other party." Failure. "Transparency," i.e., honesty. Failure. "No lobbyists working in his administration." Failure. "His commitment to seek public financing in the general election." Failure. "The list goes on and on..."
And wasn't Julieta part of b HUSSEIN obammie's team to put his failed administration together? So it's not surprising Tonia Martinez (been buddies buddies with both) is a dismal FAILURE!

  5. In my opinion, it was a mistake to allow UT to merge with TSC. I opposed it then and opposed the taking of almost 100 acres from the city to build their buildings without paying a fair price for the land. The deal Jackie Locket and the others went along with was to allow Juliet to get the land appraised, the city would pay appraised value and in exchange would move the IBWC Levee. The ridiculous appraised value was $700,000 and by shear coincidence the cost to move the levee was also $700,000. So, the city got hooked winked and got zilch, as we always do. The corrupt elite aldo got the Riverview Golf Course for nothing.

I also opposed the forming of a regional university, because we would be put at a disadvantage in the over all plan. And, I am being proven right! The notion that the Administrative Office Buildings will be in Brownsville is pie in the sky. Hopefully, I am proven wrong! The property tax wealth is in McAllen, so they are calling the shots in almost everything, but will throw us a bone along the way and we will lap it up.

The City of Brownsville should not be in the real estate business. We should not be buying properties that we do not need in the hopes we can entice UT to place the Administrative Building here. If it made sense to UT to have the Administrative Building here, then maybe we would stand a chance. We are property tax poor, politically weak and will not be taken seriously, but I could be proven wrong. This Valley Wide University is going to hurt Brownsville in many ways. We should have not allowed this to happen.

  6. The college degree-less Jessica Tetreau is proving to be worse than Martinez. She has tag teamed with equally clueless Chavez-Vasquez to pillage the city's general fund. Her splash pad? A complete waste of money as it does not even work and city crews are not qualified to repair it. Her tag team effort with Zamora to save the world and the homeless children of Brownsville? A complete failure. Her gifting of $138,000 to Ralph Vela and the BMFA to bail them out? A joke that got even funnier when Ralph approached BCIC for even MORE funding! Tetreau claims to be about District 2, the airport, her squander pad and now she saved the district from starving by bringing them Chic-fil-a! Because I am sure the restaurant's CEO would care about what idiot has to say. I can already imagine that conversation. "Um hello Mr. Chic-fil-a? I really really really really really think you should open a restaurant in my district because it is the best district and we love you! We love SpaceX! We love our crappy airport! We also love our useless splash pad and stupid easter egg hunts at taxpayer expense while the street in front of the park is full of potholes, AND WHATNOT, AND WHATNOT, AND WHATNOT! My fatass friend Erashamu Castro eats a lot and has promised to eat at your restaurant when he comes into town from Austin. I too can eat like a football player. Look at my dress, it looks like they're baking a loaf of bread in it from all the chic-fil-a I eat!" This stupid bitch will not get re-elected. Between her and Atkinson it becomes the common dilema in Cameron County, choosing the least worst candidate instead of the best qualified. Either way, anyone is better than Tetreau. Adios! Your princess dream is over and now you'll have to actually work like the rest of us to make a living.

    1. I doubt Sergio Zarate is smart enough to know how to type. Sergio is stupid, just like his wife. However, this seems to be a must if you come from district 2. Atkinson was a moron. Tetreau is dumb and lost. So far I've heard of Tetreau having at least three potential opponents and they are already making the rounds at the VFW, coffee shops, and your usual politico hangouts. With about a year left before the election it will be interesting to see what she does to make up for 3 worthless years. My prediction: Martinez will not run for re-election because of personal reasons, Gowen will run for mayor and lose. Longoria, as much as he loves to hear himself speak, will not run. Tetreau and Chavez-Vasquez will be one term losers. So the only "veterans" left on the commission will be Portillo and Villarreal. Our future doesn't look that great.

I doubt the above commenter was Sergio. Like I said, he is too stupid to think critically. I disagree that we should approach any election with the "anyone is better than the incumbent" mentality. As voters we always fall for the "we need a change" platform. We need to become better informed and ask questions, not just sit back and listen to what the candidates want us to hear. Do I agree that Tetreau has been worthless? Yes. About the only commendable achievement she has is getting elected as a write-in. Big deal. Anyone could have won against Atkinson because he lost that race himself. Have her run as a write-in again against any of the three guys who are going to run and I can assure you the results will be very different. She had the upper hand with everyone hating Atkinson and being a new candidate who could lie about owning businesses and even her home address. She lied to the voters but she cannot lie to the taxpayers because now she has a record going into the election. And by the way, chic fil a sucks!
