Ed Rivera, Newly Installed TSC Trustee |
At Thursday's Board of Trustees Meeting at the Gorgas Board Room, TSC added yet another board member with skills, Ed Rivera, to replace outgoing Dr. Robert Lozano.
Rivera, a Brownsville native, sworn in by Congressman Filemon Vela, has 35 years experience in the petrochemical industry, holding a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Houston and a master's in business administration from Harvard University.
Rivera credited his parents, who attended his swearing in ceremony, with emphasizing education. Rivera and his four siblings are all college graduates, several with advanced degrees.
The Emergency Medical Science program came under review after falling below 25 graduates in 5 years. After the department head provided evidence of greatly increased numbers in the last two years, the board agreed to continue the program.
"We had two bad years," stated Board President Francisco Rendon. "That was during our transitional period, when the program was not totally under our control."
TSC enrollment has surged 15.6% from the fall semester to the coming spring semester which will include 4,245 students, but, the increase includes dual enrollment programs involving BISD students taking TSC courses.

Congratulations Mr. Rivera and good luck to the TSC Board and the TSC program. I note that while Julieta continues to whine about her modest office and space, that TSC seems to quietly progress and becomes more committed to serving the community and out students. This quiet and modest approach is very different from Queen Julieta who had to have her face on every published product and her voice on every audio/visual production. It is refreshing to see an organization that is professional without beating their chests and shouting "Look at me"....as Dr. Garcia has been doing for years.
ReplyDeleteTSC is a perfect fit for Brownsville. It always has been for over 80 years. Thousands of TSC exs have gone on to great universities, including your buddy Montoya. What does not work is dividing a "university" between two campuses that are 60 miles apart and expect students to commute. The "consolidation" process is just an excuse to get rid of faculty. UT-RGV (Brownsville) will never grow because you cannot have a commuter university where most of the campus is in another county. Satellite, yes, but with no real sense of locality. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteI'm of the opinion that UTB will wither away because the curriculum does not cater to the local private sector. Thanks to local dumbocRATS are hell bend into making Brownsville a THIRD WORLD CITY LIKE MATAMOROS, why would any college student want to come here? In addition, Julieta pendeja garcia NEVER tried to attract, much less partner up with private sector industries/businesses to come to our area i for graduate students to find employment locally and become contributing citizens to grow the community. The DUMBOCRATS just like JULIETA LA PENDEJA have no clue how to grow our economy, that's why WE'RE THIRD WORLD.
