When the middle-of-the-night phone call that parents of adult children involved in substance abuse dread finally comes, it's still a shock. Whether you fought against it or facillitated it, it's over. Of course, life can be lost in a variety of ways, most beyond our control. but when the death is largely self-implemented, it's different. The futility is that there's nothing to be fixed, nothing to be saved, nothing to protect. It's over.
We add the name Whitney Houston to Lenny Bruce, Tim Buckley, Paul Butterfield, Kurt Cobain, Chris Farley, Michael Jackson, Janis Joplin, Keith Moon, Gram Parsons, Elvis Presley, Freddy Prinze. Sid Vicious, Amy Winehouse, Mama Cass, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison. Those are all I can think of right now. Their lives are not more or less valuable than thousands of others less well known.
