Port of Seattle, One of Top Six Ports in North America

When I asked a friend who works at the Port of Brownsville if the tariffs had affected business he simply said: "That's a good question."  So, we'll cover that story when information is forthcoming.

Reading about a dozen reports last night concerning conditions at the Port of Seattle, all but Fox News 13 Seattle, indicated that port had been significantly impacted by tariffs.  A decrease in cargo traffic, a dramatic reduction in container ships, is affecting that region's economy, with potential job losses and disruptions to the supply chain.

Yes, the Port of Seattle is being significantly impacted by tariffs, particularly those imposed on goods from China. These tariffs have led to a decrease in cargo traffic, with some reports indicating a dramatic reduction in container ships arriving at the port. The situation is causing concern for the region's economy, including potential job losses and disruptions to the supply chain.

During a Zoom call with Port of Seattle Commissioner Ryan Calkins and Port of Tacoma Commissioner Dick Marzano, Managing Members of the Northwest Seaport Alliance both raised concerns about higher unemployment and higher inflation associated with the tariffs, in particular the 145% tariff on China.

"This is like chaos messing everything up," said Abin Nellams, a longshore crane operator at the Port of Seattle. He's worked at the Port since 1996.

He said he hasn't seen anything like the tariff trickledown now making its debut in the Port of Seattle and the Port of Tacoma, and he told me he's struck by how quickly and 'immediate' the impact to the port has been.
