The Democrats of Southern Cameron County staged a candidate forum last night for TSC and BISD trustee candidates, amiably and fairly moderated by April Flores.

Four candidates vying for positions on the Texas Southmost College Board of Trustees went first, with two others, Edward Camarillo and Norma Lopez-Harris, both no-shows.

J.J. De Leon, Hilda Silva, Eva Alejandro and Veronica Deaton

With no intended disrespect for the younger Veronica Deaton, the wealth of experience from decades in education and counseling was so obvious that it's a shame the two women, Eva Alejandro and Hilda Silva, are running for the same position, Place 7.

Actually, that threesome, including J.J. De Leon, would be a credit to any board.

Alejandro, with 53 years in education this June, has been involved in everything from pre-K to teacher certification, starting out years ago in the National Teacher Corps, a program initiated by Congress in the Higher Education Act of 1965 to improve elementary and secondary teaching in low-income areas.

De Leon, with 24 years at BISD and now 6 years on the TSC Board of Trustees, seems full of ideas, wanting, for example a student trustee to sit on the TSC Board, also sees the need for more night classes, being once a "non-traditional" student himself.

The two BISD candidates making the forum, Marisol Leal and Minerva Pena, are contending for the balance of the term for Place 6, a hotly contested race that was never totally resolved, first won by Leal, then by Pena in a recount that was eventually thrown out after improper votes were discarded.

As I listened to a very animated Pena speak with folksy, religious overtones, I thought to myself that she might not be well-received outside of Brownsville.

  1. Deleon hasn’t been teaching at BISD for 31 years. How much do politicians pay bloggers to misinform the public?

    1. Thanks. I made the correction: 24 years at BISD, 6 years as a trustee at TSC.

  2. How could DeLeon be teaching for three decades at BISD if he wasn’t a teacher? He was a secretary and an administrator at BISD.

  5. I will not vote for any members of the JJ-Eva slate or the Adela slate of Edward-Norma. Say no to slates. We need individual thinkers and doers with no axes to grind. I’m surprised Jim is supporting slates.

    1. I'm typically weirded out by slates, but J.J. and Eva are incumbents who've done a good job for TSC and I'd prefer to not start over with newbies just to appease Adela who wants control of the board.
