Eddie Garcia

A reader's comment seemed pertinent to the tax assessor race currently pitting Eddie Garcia against incumbent Tony Yzaguirre:

"35 years is just too damn long to hold a political office.  I'm not saying Yzaguirre is doing a bad job or corrupt, but things can get stagnant after three and a half decades.

I've also noticed at least two other workers in his office with the name Yzaguirre, so this guy's family is pulling in a shitload of money from Cameron County.

Another thing that irks me is writing the check for my taxes out to "Tony Yzaguirre."

Is this a third world country?  Why don't we make the check out to Cameron County Tax Office, but the guy's name?  Really?"

Eddie Garcia (pictured above) agrees with the reader, feeling that 35 years is just too long for one person to hold a political office.

While Tony Yzaguirre has been entrenched in the Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector Office for 35 years, challenger Eddie Garcia is not a newbie, but someone whose toil for the City of Brownsville actually parrallel's Yzaguirre's service, but in different roles.

After a 6 year stint in the U.S. Air Force, Garcia worked 32 years for the Brownsville Police Department, 20 years leading the Brownsville City Employees Credit Union and 4 years on the BISD board.

When asked how county tax assessing and collecting would be different under his leadership, Garcia's answer was short:  "Customer service."

"My emphasis will not be just Brownsville, but improving service in all of Cameron County," Garcia told me at a recent event.

"Yes, we have several satellite offices in various places, but they don't all offer the same services," added Garcia.

  1. I met Eddie sometime back and he did not impress me… he had limited communication skills with low smarts. His actions on the school board Have had no impact whatsoever to demonstrate any kind of improvement for the district…His services but have only revealed his incompetence. I don’t think he can write a complete sentence. Oh! And don’t forget he was accused of chasing skirts as an extra curricular activity while a BISD board chairman.. is this the best we have to offer?

  3. Believe me Yzaguirre is not a smart man. All his smart personal has retired because of his smart ass attitude. He’s a true politician only nice during election time and an asshole after he wins. People forgot how he out smarted the system got auto allowance added to his salary and driving a new county issue vehicle and doesn’t have to worry about paying for gasoline or insurance. He’s taken advantage of the system for years. Why do we want someone abusing our Tax payers money after our taxes keep going up each year.
