"Dinner with Jack" Event Fills Alonso Building for BPS Fundraiser

Restaurateur Jack Gilmore,
BPS President Trey Mendez
The comfy Alonso Building of 1890 filled up for a Brownsville Preservation Society fundraiser Saturday night featuring the cuisine of former Brownsville resident Jack Gilmore.

Gilmore, owner of Jack Allen's Kitchen and Salt Traders Coastal Cooking, prepared  jalapeΓ±o bacon-wrapped quail w/peach jam, ceviche, crudo, oysters, South Texas shrimp, chicken wings, sausage and corn.

Gilmore was honored with presentations from Representative Eddie Lucio III and city administrator Ramiro Gonzalez.  Gilmore responded emotionally, stating that he viewed Brownsville as "mi gente," his "peeps."

The Brownsville Preservation Society sponsors a minimum of five upkeep projects annually for homes older than 40 years, offering low and fixed-income homeowners assistance in improving home exteriors.

  1. Thanks for the post Jim. This is what I mean about private citizens, at times working with the city doing real things for downtown and preservation. We need to talk more about the groups which make Brownsville shine and this is one of them. You look great Nena.

While Brownsville certainly has its failures, it has it successes. And people need to know just because an entity has failed us does not mean some elected officials have not faught tooth and nail to make things better. We need to help those minority elected officials to elect people of similar mindsets. We do have some very honest intelligent leaders, but the bad ones seem to get in the way of good things. I truly appreciate all of the hard work of t he private investors in Downtown.
