2014 Mean Mister Brownsville Caricature of the Year~Ramiro Gonzalez

Ramiro Gonzalez, a personable young man, but a willing foot soldier for Rose Gowen and Tony Martinez, is the subject of the 2014 Mean Mister Brownsville Caricature of the Year.

When Nena first drew "Ramiro," I was reluctant to put it on the blog as it seemed harsh.  Gonzalez, just 32 or 33, carries himself as an older man, and Nena captured that. Ramiro routinely and dutifully faced the City Commission, more prepared and confidant than his predecessors Ben Medina and Ricardo C. Luna, bowtied, with a discernible sprig of hair on top.

The well-jowled Gonzalez was the face of the lie, if not the originator of the lie, about the "need" to raise parking meter rates downtown.   The raise, purported to free up, "turn" spaces on Elizabeth and Washington Streets, never did that.  That goal was part of the lie as the plan was to funnel more money to the ultra-rich University of Texas system via a slush fund from the increased meter collections.

Gowen desperately tried to reward Ramiro for his loyalty with the BCIC directorship, but that met with some resistance.  Eventually, Rose and Tony created a new position for their heyboy, Director of Downtown Redevelopment.

  1. Welcome back!
You should be used to dealing with adolescent behavior, what with hanging out with the politicos that you do; your grandkid shows more maturity than them.

  2. Jethro Pugh, a member of Dallas’ famed “Doomsday Defense,” died Wednesday.

    He was 70.

“This is a sad day for Cowboys fans, and our thoughts and prayers go out to Jethro’s family,” said Dallas Cowboys Owner and General Manager Jerry Jones in a statement. “He was loved and appreciated by his teammates and Cowboys fans for decades, and his spirit will be felt when our team travels to Green Bay this weekend.”

From 1965 to 1978, Pugh helped anchor the defensive line, helping the Cowboys win their first two Super Bowls. He led the team in sacks from 1968 to 1972 and collected 95.5 during his career. Pugh, a tackle, rose to prominence after he was drafted in the eleventh round out of Elizabeth City State, a small school in North Carolina.

In his third season, he was involved in the defining play of the “Ice Bowl,” the 1967 NFL championship game between the Cowboys and Packers. Pugh was blocked by Jerry Kramer and Ken Bowman, as quarterback Bart Starr crossed the goal line to give Green Bay a 21-17 victory.

  3. The administration of Tony Martinez is full of "characters" who make great "caricatures" that should make us laugh....but instead make us cry. Tony Martinez....is a joke as is his administration. I passed a pawn shop today and was amazed at the number of bicycles were lined up outside for sale. We can only wonder how many of those bikes were given away to promote Rose Gowen's pet program. She should try to get the city health officer on a bike or signed up for the weight loss "Challenge". Its a shame when the guy doing the planning for the city's anti-obesity programs is obese himself. For Charro Days this year the "Vacaros" that we often see in Dan Breeden's paintings should have the city commissioners on bicycles....in costumes of course. We notice that the Herald has no sense of humor and is afraid to portray the city as the "Band of Buffoons" that they are. So sad. Brownsville continues to swirl down the toilet and what is our mayor doing......writing briefs to support Obama's effort to make more Democrats by allowing illegals to be citizens, but not those waiting in line to achieve citizenship legally.
