It is easy to complain without providing solutions, which leads to divisiveness and counter productive waste of time. Therefore, I took the liberty of visiting Lincoln Park to get a better feel on the proposed transfer of Lincoln Park to UTB. Lincoln Park is a beautiful nature preserve park, with many different type of trees and fauna. The site improvements includes the East Brownsville Little League baseball field, fencing, utilities, walkways, bathroom facilities, basketball courts, concession stands, barbeque benches with pits, educational buildings, and plenty of parking. Lincoln Park is is surrounded by nature barriers and is a environmental friendly educational park for school children to go to.

In order for the city to sell this valuable asset, UTB should pay nothing less than true replacement cost for the park. In doing so, it will give the City of Brownsville the capability to replace the Lincoln Park for Southmost residents with a bigger and better park.

I looked for land that could possible be used to replace Lincoln Park, which led me to our city owned Botanical Garden site located on Owen's Road, between Southmost Road and Boca Chica Boulevard. I found this site, which can easily be expanded to replace Lincoln Park with the same nature preserve presence Lincoln Park offers.

Although, the Botanical Garden location is inferior to the present LIncoln Park, it has many similar characteristics. This site is strategically located in the Southmost area, bounded by a Resaca to the north, which can serve as a natural barrier from land developers wanting to capitalize on the building of a new park. There is plenty of vacant land surrounding the Botanical Garden site the city can easily secure with the proceeds from the sale of Lincoln Park to ensure that it stays as a nature corridor for the area.

The Botanical Garden location requires a huge investment to secure enough land to keep it as a nature educational park with all the amenities the existing park offers. It will require widening Owen's Road for the increased traffic and getting costly utilities to the site for the baseball field to replace the existing field. It will also require getting utilities for all the building improvements that will be replaced, maintaining and watering the valuable landscaping that goes with building a first class park the Southmost residents deserve.

I have attached some pictures taken on 10/14/14 of the proposed site. Should the sale of Lincoln Park be a done deal, it should be conditional in that all proceeds be dedicated to replacing LIncoln Park. The proceeds should not to used for any other projects. The people I talked to from the southmost area liked the idea. Should, you be of like mind, contact your elected officials to let them know to consider the proposal.

Sincerely,.
Pat Ahumada

  1. Isn't that the land that was a supposed to be developed but never was? Isn't that the land that is close to a physician's residence who was instrumental in the push for TSC to be absorbed by the UT
    System?

  2. A group of physicians?

  6. So now The Great Pat is going to solve the Lincoln Park issue? Ahh yes, politics 101, see what issue is causing interest amongst the community, analyze it, and gauge what the majority wants, be their voice on the issue, and they will vote for me. The botanical garden property that Pat is referring to belongs to Dr. Robles. Pat, being the opportunist that he is, thinks he can kill a couple of birds with one stone. He approaches Dr. Robles with the idea of the college paying for his land to replace Lincoln park, so he can get Robles and his people behind him for mayor. You are so predictable Pat, you are trying to assemble an army to fight for you. Where will you find weak minded souls to follow you? Everyone has heard your song and dance a million times. Take some good advice. Save money you do not have and time that could be put to better use and get that idea of running for mayor out of your head. You will never be elected. You fooled the people twice, there will not be a third. There are no people that will join your slate Pat. You know this. Why do you fool yourself?

  7. Wasn't this land donated to the city by the across the street residents to be used as a botanical garden? I always thought this was their trick to protect them from what they might see as undesirable neighbors while getting them out from under the tax burden and maintenance chores the property requires. I was thinking they figured a botanical garden would be sparsely visited. These guys have political pull and are not likely to go for a public park that might actually get used right across the street. There may also be a covenant restricting the land use.

  8. That is the craziest idea I have ever heard. A park infront of million dollar homes. where people go BBQ, drink and do drugs. No thanks!

    1. Why is this an issue to begin with? No one at the city is proposing this idiotic idea. With all due respect to Mr. Ahumada, stop creating issues for your personal agenda sir.

  9. In true Ahumada fashion, he gets an idea out of his ass and presents it. Then he will say "I at least bring solutions to the table while others offer nothing" Idiot alert. Why doesn't Pat go before the city commission, and during the public comment section sell his brainstorm to the commissioners and Mayor? Ahhh because there is no more televising of public comments. Wait, wasn't it Pat that got rid of that?

  10. It was also Pat that helped you get out of a jail term......Pat has been out of office for a while now; why don't you get the commission to televise the public comments now since you always harp about it. Grow up valadez!

  11. What is an ad hominen attack? Overtly attacking somebody, or more subtly casting doubt on their character or personal attributes as a way to discredit their argument. The result of ad hom attack can be to undertmine someone's case without having to engage with it.

  12. Negative Anonymous! Tis! Tis! Tis! Goes to show what is wrong with Brownsville when people like you feel it is your way or the highway... The proposed site submitted by me, is exploratory discussion. No one has all the facts and no one is making any decisions. The Botanical Garden may have restrictions and covenants, but that is only applicable to the small site out of a huge tract of land that may be 70 acres or more. The two homes fronting the proposed site should not be able to mandate what the city can or cannot do. The over all public good must take precedence and the city must work with the two home owners affected, should it decide to develop the proposed site into a multiuse park,

Providing the city sells the LIncoln Park at fair market value, it is possible to buy the entire tract of land to prevent other developments nearby, but the city may have other sites in mind. This proposed site is one of many that I am sure the city will look at to consider when it comes to replacing Lincoln Park.

I can envision the road being widen and all of the front portion of the land fronting Owens road to be converted to a botanical garden to serve as a buffer between the park and the residents on Owens Road. I can envision a very well landscaped road with walkways from Owen's Road towards educational buildings in the middle section of the park and the baseball and soccer fields towards the end of the park, with basketball courts along the sides of the park. Picnic tables and pits throughout the park with trees and fauna all around the park. I can also envision walking and bicycle trails that can be designed into the over all park plan, but I guess this is too much for the negative Anonymous's of .Brownsville to envision, because you all prefer to do nothing, but complain, instead of proposing a site or providing healthy in put for discussion on the proposed site. Tis! Tis! Tis! Your way of the highway..Yeap!

  13. Dr. Roberto Robles and his neighbors started the "botanical gardens" project to keep his neighborhood free of people that he didn't like. Now P.U.B. has the task of protecting Dr. Robles so that he has no unfriendly neighbors. Another good example of how "special" people can get the city to fund projects to benefit themselvese....
