BHA Director Priscilla Rodriguez Explains Stillman Museum Grounds Tree Removal

BHA Director,
Priscilla Rodriguez
Brownsville Historical Association Director Priscilla Rodriguez tendered her resignation in February, but is staying on until a new director is found.  Rodriguez described the garden area of the Stillman Museum as one of those loose ends she wanted to tie up before passing the baton to the next administrator.

"We had to remove the ash trees planted over 30 years ago for several reasons,"  Rodriguez stated.

"They had experienced decay and posed a threat to the Stillman House during the next storm, whether this summer or next.  Also, the roots of the trees were making the brick pathways of the garden uneven and unsafe," she stated.

"Our overall plan is to restore the garden authentically to its original era with, not just cosmetic plants, but medicinal, edible and herbal plants.  We plan on adding peach, pomegranate and roses.  We will comply with the city's tree ordinance by replanting sabal palms, but further away from the house so as not to obstruct its view from the street.  We will try to preserve the pecan tree at the back of the house known as a refuge for the Red Crowned Parrot."

City Forester Roy Reyes
Our inital call to City Manager Charlie Cabler was redirected to City Forester Roy Reyes.  Mr. Reyes stated that the ash trees were interfering with growth in the garden by blocking out the sun.  He said the cutting would be "mitigated" by replanting mature trees.  He suggested we contact BHA Director Priscilla Rodriguez since he was under the impression that she and Larry Loff had authorized the removal.

  1. Ah, ha......Larry Loff and Priscilla cut the trees. Both are arrogant and seem to be protected by the B'ville Historical Assoc.......and so their "shit don't stink"...or at least they don't think so. There was no doubt in my mind that the decision to cut the trees was a Museum decision, likely not having the decision to take the action to any city office. Glad to know that Priscilla is leaving. Wish the same for Larry Loff and Peter Goodman.

  2. Mr. Reyes' comments seem to be those of a "yes man". Can we believe that if trees block the sun, they should be cut down. What a stupid comment.....which makes it seem that Mr. Reyes was not aware of the action, but thought he had to cover up the mess caused by Larry Loff and the Stillman director. Should we believe that if a tree blocks the sun.....it should be cut down. No shade for Brownsville in the future then. This group are like cats trying to cover up their poop.

  5. Larry Loff has been involved in the restoration of many historic buildings in downtown Brownsville over the years. But, unfortunately his "successes" have inflated his ego and, like here, he made decisions without including local officials. If Space X were to start cutting trees local citizens would be up in arms, but here it seems that the city forester, Mr. Reyes was surprised and felt he had to cover for Larry. Trees usually block the sun to provide us with shade. Larry Loff seems to feel that he has the power to do whatever he wants.....a symptom of a problem in the Historical Association and with city planning.

  6. This is damage control spin and it is not right. So many old properties have survived all the issues raised to justify removing the aged trees that are irreplaceable. This is just so unconscionable, but they will find ways to justify doing what is unthinkable to me. I would have never guessed someone would be so insensitive to our mature trees on a historical site. No words to describe the disappointment and unwarranted demise of these beautiful trees.

    1. Pat, you've always been kinder to dogs and "mature" trees than to our fellow Browntowner. Why not start a Meals On Wheels and serve the mature people? Do something other than bellowing nonsense.

Please don't let the door hit your very ample butt on the way out of town.

  9. Did Charles Stillman plant the trees?
To the 2:57 poster, surely you jest when you compare Goodman to either Rodriguez or Loff.

  10. To begin with, ash trees should have never been planted around a historical site. Ash trees are what developers plant on subdivisions because they grow quick, require little maintenance and throw decent shade. in other words, it's a cheap, short term solution to landscaping. But ash trees are weak, break down , and rot quick. I'm not familiar with Ms Rodriguez ample ass, but I'm not seeing the arrogance, just trying to correct an old mistake probably made during one of Santa Ana's, I mean Ahumada's, checkered terms . I'm surprised STillman House hasn't insisted on quality oak trees, which grow slower but are stronger and longer lasting. Mr Ahumada's "irreplaceable" comments on ash trees shows he, a real estate guy, knows little about their being plain, ordinary run-of-the-mill. If anything, the trees seem to expose someone's obsessive compulsive disorder to say something, anything.

    1. Dr. Numa, I am an expert on Mrs. Rodriguez's ample ass and I don't believe her office chair has the structural integrity to sustain weight of that magnitude. The weight to load ratio is such that a collapse could be imminent any day now. The shock wave produced by a collapse could demage the historical buildings in the area. Mr. Lof and I are working on a solution to shore up the structure. Thank you all for your concern about Mrs. Rodriguez's ample ass. She was unaware that there was a problem, now that she is, she is actively and diligently working with the city for funding to retrofit any at-risk structures.

  11. Priscilla and Larry were effective once and now are taking up space. Priscilla saw the writing on the wall and is leaving. Good riddance to that carpetbagger. We need a Mexicano to lead the Heritage Museum! Prissy is a hoity-toity wino who spouts the white revisionist history of Brownsville! Don't be fooled The Heritage Museum is run by RepubliKKKans!

  12. This has nothing to do with personalities, it has to do with trees and the importance they have in our environment. The personalities has to do with the decision making to cut down the trees, which should have followed the procedure to get permit and remove trees with a plan to mitigate the removal of these old huge and beautiful trees. Palm tree roots do not grow and spread side ways. To claim they were damaging the foundation is hogwash. The trees represent a historical significance of 30 years or longer, and they represent life. Whoever took the time to plant left a legacy we must continue to pass on to our children in being good stewards of our environment. This is what Brownsville Beautification is all about. Unless they went through the process to petition the removal and mitigation to cut these trees on a historical site is criminal. No one person has the authority to circumvent the process, it must be documented with approval to get it done.

  13. Palm or Ash Trees removal should have gone through the process to get it done. If they did, Kuddos to them, if the did not, then someone should be held accountable. No one person has the authority to arbitrarily cut down trees, particularly on a historical site. Just plain and simple. This is what we teach our children and must try to abide by through ordinances put in place to protect our trees and environment.

  16. Sorry to hear about the tree at the Stillman House Museum but I'm glad Priscilla is leaving. She has taken advantage of her position in many ways. Living in the alonso building, using the museum money for her own needs and using museum employees to run her errands. Good Riddance!

  17. Finally Brownsville is getting rid of the trash in the BHA. Is anyone surprised that they do whatever the hell they want. It doesn't surprise me one bit that Ms. Rodriguez is heading back to Weslaco, let her go crap where she eats. She always complained about the compadre system and there she goes sashaying her enormous ass into a position that daddy got her. Hypocrite and proud Tea Party member, Ms. Rodriguez has always used her position and staff to do her bidding. But, not all of the blame lies with her. Lof is the one who empowered her and uses her lopsided assets to do his bidding. I would say that he is tapping that ass but we all know that he doesn't swing that way. Lof is very adept at restoring historic buildings and making the tax payers foot the bill. Yes that museum is very republican, it is pretty obvious. Even though they put a "Latino" at the helm, they made sure that she was the most white-washed Mexican that they could find. What degree does she have? Is it Chicano Studies? yet, she speaks little to know Spanish. My favorite debacle has to be the Porfirio Diaz car, too funny. Cutting down trees is the least of it, these vultures have been raping and pillaging Brownsville for years. Good for Brownsville that they will be down one of these vultures, but poor Weslaco. And as for Lof, maybe he should just go back to Rancho El Cielo and look after his cadre of "boys", oh I mean researchers.
