Turmoil At City Commission Meeting 1/21/2014 As Commissioners Find Out Tony Has Been Using AEP Settlement Funds As a Slush Fund

From the editor:  Some of the city commissioners are just now discovering what we've been posting on this blog for several months; Mayor Tony Martinez is doing whatever damn well he pleases.  Some are just now learning about the mayor's downtown office, the Brownsville Downtown Revitalization Information Office, the interactive video display system, the broken elevator at El Tapiz building; all subjects we've covered on MMB.  As for the mayor, he does not care one wit about the what city commissioners think and much less individual taxpayers.  He's been footloose and fancy free with taxpayer money and since April 2013 he's been tapping into the $3,060,000 recovered from AEP Texas in a lawsuit, using it as his own personal slush fund.  Commissioners Villarreal and Portillo placed an item on the agenda at the January 21, 2014 City Commission meeting to appraise how those monies had been spent and try to seize control of the balance of that fund.  Below is the actual agenda item:
12. Consideration and ACTION to acknowledge the expenditures paid from the AEP lawsuit settlement proceeds and to approve an expenditure budget from the remaining proceeds.
(Commissioners J. Villarreal/D. Portillo)
Now, the video of the City Commission meeting discussion of that particular agenda item chaired by Mayor Pro-Tem Rose Gowen(video quality slightly less than normal as videotaped off a laptop):

  1. This should be no surprise to the Commissioners, give me a break Commissioners, Mr. Barton has been writing about this for months. The only question is where the money was coming from. In the words of the late great Paul Harvey, "And now you know...the rest of the story"

  2. 'Da Mayor Tony Martinez has learned much from his friends like Julieta Garcia, Freddy Rusteberg, et al.....which is spend without concern about what people/citizens think...their focus is short lived and harmless. Julieta wanted an $600,000.00 mural in the new library that didn't have enough space for the books from the old library. Julieta built a fine arts building with insufficient storage space and no parking. United Brownsville, made up of all the above mentioned "Friends of Tony" don't give a rat's ass about what the public thinks on any issue, don't care what the commissioners think on any issue and are surely not afraid to use tax dollars to follow their mis-adventures. Its sort of like the Kardenas Klan trained the entire city in fund management and abuse of other people's money. They don't seem to get the idea that the city of Brownsville has evacuated downtown and is now living comfortably north of downtown. City leaders (shouldn't really be called leaders...perhaps city abusers is better) continue to be out of touch with the reality of Brownsville. Tony Martinez can't lead....seems only to spend.

  7. If they want to revitalize downtown, that $3,000,000 windwall fund that Tony is treating like a piggy bank would go a long way. Food for thought vs. hiking meter rates on poor people.

  8. On another subject, BHA has a majority of the board members who are business men from MATAMOROS...Why? Who appoints them? Why would these men take on such a position? They are making a living in the corrupt business system business in Matamoros. One is the Chairman Sampayo. Did the Mayor appoint these individuals to do his dirty work? Haven't we seen enough of corruption in other entities? FBI where are you?
