Activist Dagoberto Barrera Preaches Against Raises for Sheriff, JP and Constable

From the editor:  Below is a tiny 45 second snippet from the public comment of Dagoberto Barrera at the Salary Grievance Committee hearing held on September 10, 2013 at the Dancy Court House.  The 83 year old Barrera, in his distinctive, bombastic oratorical style, admonishes the petitioners to live within their means, being thankful for being employed and having good health.  He states that any surplus in the budget should be returned to the taxpayers.  The committee rejected each of the raise requests with an identical 8-1 vote.

  1. It would be interesting to know how many "unearned" raises Mr. Barrera turned down during his tenure at BISD. He went to work in the Sixties, I believe, when teacher pay was not so much. Did he insist that he could make do with that to the end of his career?

    1. s raines when Mr Barrera was a teacher he earn the appropriate income which was lower that the private sector and that is how it should be. TAX DOLLAR EMPLOYEES-PUBLIC SECTOR SHOULD EARN MUCH MUCH LESS THAT THE PRIVATE SECTOR. We the private sector pay the wages to our employees the public sector and they must earn LESS. But look at what Mr. Barrera did, he brilliantly invested his meager wages in real estate and now owns numerous rental properties. What little raises Mr. Barrera earn were well earn and deserving because he was also an excellent teacher in comparison to the ill prepared teachers of today.

Google the word "codger". That is exactly what he is. Oh, go ahead and place "imbecilic" just before it.

  2. The County Commissioners granted Gomez the "Titles" of higher rank without a pay increase. If Gomez is authorized to pick and choose who these "Higher Ranking" Officers will be than the Commissioners completely ignored the Civil Service Process. Those positions should not be appointed, they should be assigned by competitive exam. The Civil Service System is there to prevent "compadrismo". The "appointment" of higher ranks should be challenged with the Civil Service Commission if not placed through the competitive exam process.

  3. In the video, Mr. Barrera contends the grievance committee should deny the huge raise from elected officials, but Raines should know better. Raines' comment is little more than a distraction and a distortion of his speech's purpose.

  4. Those asking for raises, including the Sheriff, are out of touch with reality and out of touch with their constituents. We don't want them to get raises while the rest of the community struggles to raise families on what they earn. Sheriff Lucio is the primary culprit....or asshole....who seeks far more than he is worth. Sheriff Lucio is just as corrupt at Villalobos or Limas....he just hasn't been indicted.

    1. Do you vote or do you just complain about people you disapprove of that are wanting or needing raises? How does your neighbor getting a raise affect you? It doesn't.

    2. Lucio is the only "real" cop we've had as sheriff for quite a while. I mean, a Captain, with Harlingen PD/retired? Duh!!!

  5. Wonder if anybody in Dag's family ever tries to plead with him to stop ruining the family's name? And they probably do, but Dags loves himself just too damned much.
