Is A Quarter Century Enough for Tony Yzaguirre, Jr. as Tax Assessor?

Mean Mister Brownsville

From the editor:  Not unlike a number of our politicos, Tony Yzaguirre is deeply entrenched in the art of mutual political backscratching and entitlement that pervades Cameron County.  He has a number of his relatives employed by the county.  As tax assessor, he also serves on the Election Commission, a body that has been absolutely impotent in protecting the integrity of elections in the county.  Based on performance, all of the elected officials on the the Election Commission should be voted out.

Then, we have the reported sleight of hand where Yzaguirre feigned retirement, asking the county to convert his car allowance into salary, enabling him to float off into retirement with a higher base salary.

We do have an option to Yzaguirre this November in Moses Sorola, who is running as a Republican. Below is the short bio sent to me by Sorola:

Moses Sorola of Brownsville has announced that he is a candidate for the position of Cameron County Tax Assessor -Collector. Mr. Sorola has a degree in Business Management with a major in Accounting from the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. He retired from Federal Service as a member of the Federal Senior Executive Service (SES-1)and in his last position was the Deputy Director of Maintenance with a workforce of nine thousand personnel.
Moses Sorola

After his retirement, he moved to Brownsville in 1988 and is currently the owner of ABC Services LLC, a bookkeeping, tax service, and payroll company. “ I am a certified teacher and taught school in the Brownsville Independent School District and I am familiar with the many challenges faced by the school teachers each day. I was the General Manager of two maquiladors in Mexico and I am keenly aware of the process and procedures necessary to maintain a good working relationship with Mexico.”

With his personnel and business management experience Sorola feels that can be of great assistance to the tax paying citizens of Cameron County and other tax collecting entities in assuring fair assessment of taxes. “We need a new look at what is going on in the tax business and we need a committed advocate to the reassessment and management philosophy in the computation and application of taxes ”.

Mr. Sorola said that he is looking forward to the opportunity to use his management expertize in the office of the Tax Assessor –Collector. After 24 years of one person as the Tax Assessor-Collector, we need a change and an independent look at our tax process.

“As a business person I know the serious impact of continued increase in taxes on business and personal income. I have experienced success in my life and I want to share that management success and a positive attitude with the personnel in Tax Assessor-Collector Office and the Cameron County tax payers.”

Mr. Sorola is married to Norma Sorola, the Director of Primer High School, a charter school in Brownsville; he has a son who is an attorney in Brownsville, Louis Sorola, and three daughters in San Antonio; Mardi, Michelle, and Patricia. “I look forward to using my experience and management skills for the betterment of our community. “

  2. What? The problem we have in Cameron County and PARTICULARLY in Brownsville is that we under pay our elected officials. This is why they steal from us. We are idiots for not offering a six figure salary for a mayor that can lead this this city out of the cesspool were in. Instead we get part time leaders that rob us blind. Who in their right mind would want to be Mayor of Brownsville for free? People that want to steal, that's who! We should be concentrating on the CORRUPTION we are faced with by our electorate! We should all be uniting against local yocal politics and politiqueras!

  3. I will vote for Mr. Lopez (instead of Ms. Hernandez-Garcia), and I will vote for Mr. Sorola. I was raised as a democrat, but I will take ANY republican than runs against the local establishment filled with corruption. I hope someone is running against Ms. Zamora (city commission) because she has done NOTHING in my district and she will get NOTHING from voters in her district.

  4. Friend of Tony says,

Mr. Yzaguirres position is one that has been held in high regard and has been filled as such. Just because he's been re-elected many times don't throw him in the same ball club with a lot of our other elected officials that have disgraced not only their respective positions but Brownsville and CC as well. I totally understand the we need change sentiment that has been stolen from us by politiqueras? Vote against the folks that drive that machine! We failed to do so in these run offs regarding Hernandez and Gomez but we do have a very small group of fine officials that serve us.

  5. Our public officials don't steal because they are not paid enough. They steal because they are thieves. If being underpaid was motivation for thievery 80% of the county's population would be thieves and they are not. They steal, in part, because they have a sense of entitlement and a lack character. And sometimes because they think they are protected from the consequences if they are caught. For instances, Cadriel, who stole a job from all the other applicants by cheating on the test. Nothing has come of it because he is protected. I'm only surprised he didn't get a severance package. Or Joey De La Garza. The list goes on. I wonder about those whose protection is so good we never even hear about them.

    1. Our mayor you idiot! You wanna do the job for free? Go ahead we'll end up in the same position were in now. I'm talking about getting someone that knows and has experience pulling a city out of the cesspool. That person would be well worth six figures.

  7. MR Izaguirre is the biggest RAT in Cameron County. Worst he feeds on the properties that hard working people have lost after they fall behind on taxes. Just check how many properties he and his friends own and thats how you'll know if he really needs the stupid pennies that FAT BASTARD Dan Sanchez wants to give him.

  8. Check your facts 4:56

I'm a friend of Tony's and cant even get a copy of the properties that are up for auction until its officially released. Get your shit straight stupid! He's one of the only elected officials that hasn't abused his position.
Plus, how can he abuse it? Maybe if he knows you you don't have to wait as long in line? If your going to hate there's plenty of corruption by our local electorate to choose from. Starting with Aurora down to Gomez with a slew of officials in between. There is actual facts behind that!
