Norma Hernandez is said to be a professional politiquera, specializing in cultivating the elderly in nursing homes, adult high rises and adult day care centers. We're told that when a new person is admitted to one of these facilities, that Mrs. Hernandez registers them to vote if necessary, adding them to her lists of elderly registered voters in care facilities.
Over time, a relationship develops between the politiquera and the elderly, with the older person even viewing the politiquera as a friend, or at the very least, a compassionate, nice person with a thoughtful interest in them. Of course, this is all part of a con game, designed to harvest the vote of the elderly when it is needed. It goes without saying that relationships have to be developed with care facility management, staff and even home health care practitioners to ensure their cooperation when the time is right.
These adult care facilities become viewed by the Hernandez's and their ilk as their turf or territory, much like the mafia fiercely protected their ground during the 30's and the Zetas and Gulf cartels fight for territorial rights today. If another candidate so much as says "hi" to one of their voters, all proverbial hell breaks loose. Or, if an adult son like Zeke Silva happens upon a herding of elderly voters and wants to separate his parent from the herd, the politiqueras quickly get defensive and belligerent. Thinking out loud, what can adult children with their elderly parents in adult care facilities do to prevent this manipulation, coercion and abuse? Obviously, if Election Administrator Roger Ortiz simply enforced the election code, such prevention measures would not be necessary. But history shows us that is not happening.
Here are a few ideas:
- Be alert for campaign or political materials in your parent's room
- Listen carefully when they talk about someone befriending them, registering them to vote or gifting them inappropriately
- Instruct the care facility management to NEVER allow your parent to be transported outside the facility WITHOUT your permission.
- Call the police if such instructions are violated.
- Assist your parents to vote THEIR preferences during early voting or with a mail-in ballot
- Please document and report any politiquera activity in the home so that other children of elderly parents can be alerted.
With what face (that only a mother could love) can Erin take on the role of Justice of the Peace ? If you damn well know you cheated the voters out of an election .... what a fraud!

DeleteMr. Barton: I am going to try to summarize a story lived in first person terms. When my mom was alive, she used to attend TLC center for the elderly. During election time, this particular place would be visited by people asking for votes, sometimes by candidates, others by "representatives". The day care directors GAVE PERMISSION to these people. They would gather in the main saloon or dinning area to hear their speeches. Two or three days later, people that would be called "aids" (now I know they are paid politiqueros) would bring mail in voting ballots and "assist" those people that were registered voters to fill their mail in ballots. Sometimes the people would say that they wanted to wait until election day to vote. The actual vans from the daycare center would take them to the voting sites. I have to honestly say that I dont know if these people ever traveled with them in any of the vans or if they ever told them who to vote for; I was not there. I did tell my mother NEVER to sign anything dealing with voting or with government papers until she actually showed me what it was. I took my mother in person to vote and let her vote for whoever she wanted to. My mom passed away five yrs ago, and I 've never returned to the daycare center since then. My point is this: If this was going on 5 yrs. ago, and if this is a major problem, WHY is it that there is a lot of arguing and no solution ?

The people that are supposed to protect the public and their constitutional rights are in bed with each other. None of them have the balls required to take a stand for justice!

ReplyDeleteNo Jim you are wrong, Norma does not come to the day care centers to ingratiate herself with the elderly, in fact she rarely goes, she sends her politiqueras to distribute push=cards, but come early voting and she is there to carry the elderly to the polls like cattle, and she does not allow them to vote for whom they want, which is sad, most candidates come to the day care because they can address large groups of voters in one place, they are usually nice, Yolanda came several times and the people loved her, she took time to talk to everyone of them, she brought pan de dulce, prices, she came to their dances and danced with them, Erin did not come once, but the director got paid to allow Norma to come and pick them up, it is not right that they led the candidates on knowing that nobody is going to get any votes but Norma.

Allowing vulgar rantings from posters discredits your observations as a supposed-journalist and maybe even as a community activist. You seem to be riding the same First Amendment bus as most self-serving blogs tend to.

DeleteWhy is everyone making such a big deal about this lady winning the democratic nomination? She has NOT won anything yet; she has to face Mr. Lopez in November and if HE plays it right, she can end up with NOTHING but a pie in the face. If she or her mom did anything illegal, THAT needs to be proven; look at the PRI, everyone knows they won with their old tricks but the law is asking for proof; if the system is part of the problem, no proof is found because those inside the system ARE the problem.
