Several Candidates Refuse to Sign Non-Politiquera Pledge on Day of Villalobos Indictment

With early voting starting May 14, it's so important to know how individual candidates feel about fair elections

On the very day of the indictment of our county's district attorney for alleged corruption, CAVA or Citizens Against Voter Abuse set up a table conspicuously in front of the elections office.  The setting was chosen intentionally by group chairperson Mary Helen Flores to draw attention to the obvious; that fair elections are not possible as long as candidates choose to cheat by using politiqueras to harvest votes.

Candidates were given 30 days notice with two ads in The Brownsville Herald  detailing the opportunity to publicly, before witnesses, sign the document promising not to use politiqueras.  Several candidates approached the table during the day, eager to sign the document.  Elmo Aycock, candidate for U.S. Congress, District 34, was the first to sign.  Also signing, during the day:  Yolanda Begum, candidate for Justice of the Peace, 2-2,   Israel Tapia, also JP candidate, 2-2, Chuck Mattingly, candidate for district attorney, Maria De Ford, also candidate for district attorney, Alex Torres, candidate for State Representative and John Shergold, candidate for Cameron County Democratic Chair..

A notable no-show was Erin Hernandez-Garcia, candidate for Justice of the Peace, 2-2. Denise Saenz-Blanchard, Adela Garza, Anthony Troian and Filemon Vela,  all district 34 candidates, did not appear to sign to sign the document...  One District 34 candidate, Jessica Puente Bradshaw, was out of town and used a proxy to sign..

Interestingly, Cookie Corrubias, a candidate for JP, walked by the table, looked at the document, but chose not to sign, mumbling something about being "on the clock."  At his 6:00 pm departure,  though,  he gave the table a wide berth, giving the CAVA group a feint wave goodbye.  Sylvia Garza-Perez, a candidate for County Democratic Chair, was also seen keeping a safe distance from the CAVA table.  Jared Hockema, quoted in an interview early last month, that he would "absolutely" sign the document was also a no-show.

CAVA offers a $5,000 reward for information leading to a voter fraud conviction.

  1. Erin Hernandez cannot win without her fathers Ernie Hernandez fraud votes. How could anyone expect an Hernandez to sign a no fraud pledge? Fraud is the only way they know how to win.

I use to be a cheez until they started backing corrupt and unethical candidates like Ernie Hernandez and his daughter Erin Garcia.

  2. The cheez has failed, they endorsed candidates like Ted Hasse and Uresti, and neither of the the two won. Looks like Erin's endorsement from Cheez might not be so good for her. All the negativity starting from the vending contract with the county, her dad's sordid past, and the recent relative who is charged for murder is most definitely going to affect her campaign whether she likes it or not. I'm looking forward into seeing how many mail in ballots come in from Erin.

  3. The Begum's have already hired legal counsel and professional poll watchers from Ausitn to monitor mail in and voter fraud. Any repeat of the Ruben Pena V. Ernie Hernandez election will result in a lawsuit against Erin, Ernie, Norma and their politiceras. I also hear that the Begum's have contacted the Texas Rangers and attorney General by forwarding these agencies affidavits taken from past elections and copies of deposition transcripts from the trial against Ernie Hernandez.

    It will be fun......

  4. I'm proud of the candidates who did sign. Erin Hernandez would have been smart to sign. She could still have hired politiqueras and stole the election. Who would stop her? Roger "Rogelio" Ortiz? Gimme a break!

  5. Isn't this about as useful as having an employer state they will not fire you for getting pregnant then they find another reason to fire you but the real reason was cuz you got pregnant? Seems to me like a big waste of time and puro chow but oh well. Let's go through the motions and pretend this matters. Probably the ones that didn't go, knew it was a waste of time and had something better to do with their day than play this game. Kind of like when the girlfriend ends up dead in a parking lot, shot through the back but she has a yellow piece of paper that says restraining order in her hand. Just a useless piece of paper.

  9. I like CAVA and, no doubt there is a place for them in this city and county. However, there seems to be an alarming trend in this country that almost seems like attempts to control candidates through extortion. It's like, sign a pledge that you will never support abortion, stem cell research, immigration reform, gun control, politiqueras or people with red cars. The implication is that if you don't sign then you support these things. A politician with guts will refuse to sign one of these pledges regardless of the cause. And that is because an honest politician (oxymoron, I know) knows that despite their current view on an issue, circumstances change and so do opinions. I don't give spit for a politician that is not willing to reconsider an issue as circumstances change. I mean, do you really want someone that rigid making decisions that are going to impact your life? Don't you think they ought to be able to, when shown the evidence, change their opinion and offer that perhaps the earth isn't flat after all? Now, I can't imagine when politiqueras will ever be a good idea but that is beside the point.

  11. I approve of CAVA's efforts to bring awareness to stop the use of politiqueras who harvest votes. That's great. I DO NOT approve of CAVA trying to force someone to sign a worthless pledge. Does that mean if everyone signs then the problem goes away?
