Our Visit With Jared Hockema, Candidate for Democratic Chair

Nena and I sat down with Jared Hockema and Evelon Dale at Tony Roma's for an interview

Mean Mister Brownsville: One of the perceptions and perhaps fears is that, if you're elected Democratic Chair, you will merely be a continuation of the mentality of Gilberto Hinojosa, the current Cameron County Democratic Chair.

Jared Hockema:
Well, of course, I've worked for Mr. Hinojosa for a number of years when he was judge and now party chair. But, Evelon knows this. We've not always agreed. In fact, last year it came to a point where I thought I might be fired. I agree with many things he's done, but disagree with some things as well.

Mean Mister Brownsville: Let me run something else by you that I've heard. Yolanda Begum brought you 1,500 signatures when she filed for Justice of the Peace, District 2-2. And, of course, Ernie Hernandez. . . .

Jared Hockema:
Yes, she brought in a lot of signatures. I'm not certain how many. We don't check the signatures right away, until all of the candidates have submitted theirs. Then, we have to verify which candidate got an individual signature first, see if the signature is valid, etc. Under the Freedom of Information Act, we have to make that information available to other candidates.

Mean Mister Brownsville Yes, I understand about the signatures being made available, but my question is concerning the application itself. Ms. Begum told me that someone on the staff had directed her to check a certain box, which proved to be the wrong one. She had to later redo the application. In the interim, she learned that Ernie Hernandez had been given access to her application. That concerned her.

Jared Hockema:
Actually, the application has to be made available to other candidates as well. Ernie and Erin Hernandez did try to get her candidacy thrown out on that basis, but I told them that wasn't happening. A candidate is allowed to make adjustments to their application.

Mean Mister Brownsville: Would you agree that the reputation of the Democratic Party in Cameron County has taken a hit in the last few years. You mentioned corruption in your remarks at a meet and greet the other day. Is there anything a county chair can do about this?

Jared Hockema:
I believe he or she can set the tone. You may not be able to stop officials from inappropriate behavior, but I believe in speaking out when necessary. If they continue to transgress, I think the party needs to find other, qualified candidates to run for those offices.

Mean Mister Brownsville: Cameron County has incredibly low voter turnout. Any ideas?

Jared Hockema:
In the past we've set up barbeques at polling places. I did not believe in that concept. I set them up as I was instructed. I don't think we actually gained any voters that way. I think blockwalking, going out to the people, talking about why they should vote is a more effective use of resources. Help with transportation to the polls is another effective approach. Once people get into the habit of voting, they will continue.

Mean Mister Brownsville Another hot topic is land use on South Padre Island's Isla Blanca Park. Do you have any comments on those issues?

Jared Hockema:
While I understand the resistance to commercialization of Isla Blanca, I'm not certain that using that park as merely a trailer park for part-time residents gives our local citizens the access they deserve. These are vocal, well-to-do folks, but full-time residents need some representation here as well. Also, any revenue generated from this park could be used to build other parks where needed.

Mean Mister Brownsville Citizens Against Voter Abuse or CAVA has challenged candidates for public office in Cameron County to sign an affidavit on the steps of the election office vowing NOT to use politiqueras. Would you be willing to sign such a document?

Jared Hockema:
Absolutely

  1. WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, THIS IS A QUESTION FOR EVELON DALE: DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A POLITICAL ACTIVIST OR A HIGH PRICED POLITIQUERA?

  2. I have seem Yolanda Begums application. It is a one page application. Not only did it have misspellings, she also checked the wrong box on the term. If she needs assistance filling out a one page application how on earth does she think she cn run a courtroom. This just shows how limited she really is.

    1. Erin,

You misspelled three words in your short comment above, but that shows how limited you are.

    2. Three? I ran spell check on it. It caught none, Jimbo.

    3. Erin,

Let me walk you through this. You used "seem" for seen. That's one. You wrote "Yolanda Begums application". It should have read "Yolanda Begum's application", as in the possessive form. That's two. Lastly, you wrote: "How on earth does she think she "cn run a courtroom." That, obviously, should have read: "How on earth does she think she can run a courtroom?" That's three, four if you count leaving off the question mark. Someone who can't write grade school vernacular, even utilizing spell check, is not particularly qualified to hold down a job, much less political office.

  3. With all due respect, Evelon is a campaign advisor, and she does not bring one single vote to any of the campaigns she is helping.

  4. this was a good interview. Jared's association with Gilbert make me suspicious. He did say all the right things in this interview though. I am leaning more toward voting for him since I have read this. The only thing that is still sticking in my mind though is the response he gave to KURV about the Voter ID law. I guess he was just towing the party line (which is a negative in some cases). Does he really believe that hispanics are less sophisticated than anglo saxon texans to the point that we are too dumb to have ID? Much of the population of valley is 1st, 2nd or 3rd generation American. In Mexico, everyone has an IFE, or voter ID.
But, I realize I am not going to see eye to eye on everything with another person. Thanks for the interview. You should do more of these!

  6. A vote for Hockema is a vote to continue the corruption and power mongering of the Dumbokratic Party in Cameron County. It is time to have new blood and cleanse the Party of the corrupt influence of Gilberto Hinojosa......which produced Judge "Disable" Limas, jailed ex-sheriff Conrado Cantu, mishandled elections, favortism in county hiring because of the Party officials, nepotism, fraternization and other unethical practices. The people of Cameron County need an ethical and honest official and an end to the Dumbokratic practices of the past.

  7. To Erin,
It is my understanding that the application for Justice of the Peace involves filling out name address and a few other personal details, I highly doubt that she would misspell any of this. Your lies are not the least bit credible.

    1. I have proof that YES, she did make these very simple careless mistakes....and no Jim I am not Erin...I happen to be involved in another candidates race.

    2. So, Anonymous, you're a supporter of "another" candidate with a more than casual interest in the Justice of the Peace, District 2-2 race, enough interest to utilize the Freedom of Information Act to access Begum's application?

Now, you claim "proof" of "simple, careless" mistakes on that application, similar to the type of careless spelling errors you made on your initial comment on this article.

You also inform us anonymously that you are not Erin Hernandez. Is that about it?

  11. What do you think about the article in today's Herald warning people to "Beward of Luis Saenz"?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Luis Saenz just trashed his campaign. Good for the corrupt creeps like Saenz to show their true (lack of) character before election day so we can vote against them.

      Delete
    2. Luis Saenz was supported by Cheezmeh at first. They did a couple of chicken plate giveaways together that Saenz paid for, one in Los Fresnos, one in Cameron Park. But Saenz was also supposed to pay Cheezmeh $2,500 for blockwalking, phone-banking and political advice. Saenz changed his mind, deciding he was better off without Erasmo and Linda. That pissed Erasmo off bigtime, so Cheezmeh paid for the ad in The Herald against Saenz.

      Typical Brownsville politics. Pendejos!

    3. Cheezmeh should kiss and make up with Saenz since he graciously put a bond on Erin H Garcia's murderous cousin Aroldo Cadriel.

    1. Correcting grammatical or spelling errors is not normally my thing. We all make errors, including typos. An exception is made with Erin Hernandez and her supporters because they have criticized Begum's accent and education while being only semi-literate themselves. Erin recently utilized a spell check application on one of her short comments and still couldn't spot the obvious errors.

  13. Erin should learn how to speak Spanish. She is hispanic and yet she is a POCHA,wannabe gringa. I would like to see her attempt to speak in Spanish at one of her functions. How do you like them apples?

  14. Oh Jim, you are really showing your age when you keep thinking you are talking to Erin. Your slowly becoming more and more Senile. You all must really fear the Hernandez's to be writing about them so much. They must be doing something right with their campaign, or you all hear about all the support that continues to grow and get behind them.

    1. Yes, Erin. I'm an older person, but with age comes experience and judgement. Many your age think they know it all. May I gently point out, for future reference, that it's you're, not "your"?

It's understandable that you would try to be upbeat with your campaign, but it's not really going that well. Probably, the revelations about your Uncle Adriol's murder and molestation charges have hurt. Even the road built with county caliche leading to Adriol's firing range has to hurt. Many still talk about the illegal hiring of your Uncle Robert at the international bridge when someone in Human Resources took the test for him.

The information about your family's use of politiqueras and the stolen elections takes its toll as well.

So, no Erin, things are not going well for your election as you imply, but I understand your need to put on a brave face.

  15. You can gently stick it up your ass James Lenard Barton. Your obsession with this family is sickening. And the only people who talk about all of the shit you have mentioned in this post are you and your lose friends hat hang out at the crescent moon cafe. You and your little begum group are a bunch of fucken losers.

    1. Erin,

These exchanges are an opportunity to demonstrate to the public your skill set in handling difficult situations. One can either exhibit poise, professionalism, respectful disagreement or act like a petulant, undisciplined, quick-tempered child. You have chosen the latter.

All of this serves the electorate well as they can use these exchanges to differentiate between candidates based on how they handle themselves.

  16. Jim,

You are such a fool. You will never get another interview with Jared Hockema. He and Ernie Hernandez are tight and I'm sure Ernie doesn't like this back and forth with his daughter.

  17. Last I heard the Hernandezes were backing Jared Hockema's opponent, Sylvia Garza Perez.

    1. Without knowing that for a fact, it does seem logical since Sylvia is the niece of Herminia Becerra, the Hernandez's favorite politiquera.

  18. Brownsville Cheezmeh fully supports Erin H. Garcia for Justice of the Peace, 2-2. She is the most qualified candidate by far. Yolanda Begum did not even attend our forum which shows disrespect for we the people.

    1. Cadriel murdering a woman and dumping her body on a highway shows disrespect for people. The other Cadriel having his test taken for him to get him a County job he couldn't qualify for shows disrespect for people. Not showing up at a Cheezmeh forum whose owner just said he is fully supporting her opponent shows intelligence.

    2. True enough. The Brownsville Cheezmeh forum was set up to showcase their candidates as well as their political savvy. Linda Castro was already working as a fetchit girl for Erin Hernandez.

It's all about to come to a head with two pending lawsuits against the Castros.
