Yolanda Begum, Creative Justice of the Peace Candidate, Precinct 2-2

by Jim Barton on Sunday, October 23, 2011 at 11:00am

In brief comments before a full house at V.I.C.C.'s Los Compadres Ballroom, Yolanda Begum promised "creative solutions" and "compassion" in dealing with difficult cases that come before her if elected as Justice of the Peace, Precinct 2-2. As if to illustrate her creative skills, she then put on a different kind of fundraiser, featuring 20 female and 5 male models, as well as singing and dancing. At the end of the evening the magnificent collection of 60 dresses were given to those lucky enough to have their names drawn from a raffle jar.

A well known local politico grabbed my arm as I made my exit from the event: "She's certainly different from the norm, a very genuine person. We just need to move away from all this corruption." Certainly for some, Ms. Begum's candidacy is attractive because she's running against Erin H. Garcia, Ernie Hernandez' daughter. Some feel that the Hernandez family uses politiqueras like Herminia Becerra, pictured here with an Erin H. Garcia administrator badge.
One other announced JP candidate, Raul Lopez, was introduced at the Rancho Viejo Republican Gala on Friday but did not have a speaking role.

  3. Sounds like a great event and Mrs Begum a worthy candidate. No more corruption is right.

  4. What I'm wondering is....who is so corrupt... Is Ms. begum and her supporters suggesting that her predecessor Judge Tony Torres was corrupt? Or is she referring to her opponents? Because form what I know of all of the candidates in this race are that none of them have ever been elected officials before and they all have pretty clean and professional backgrounds. What is this corruption that these pro begum supporters are referring to?

  7. This post previously appeared in "El RRUN RRUN":

"Mrs. Begum may be blessed with plenty of good intentions but I have three problems casting my vote for her. I feel we need to elect a candidate who is well educated and brings some concept of the law to this position. We do not want or need any more politicians the likes of Linda Salazar, Minerva Peña, Sofia Benavides, Ernie Hernandez, or Ruben Cortez in such responsible positions. Secondly, it is no secret Evelon Dale is associated with Mrs. Begum’s campaign. Those of us who are familiar with Evelon know she has used politiqueras in the past when she ran for Port Commissioner. Finally, Mrs. Begum has chosen Javier Villarreal as her campaign treasurer. Villarreal, much like Mrs. Begum’s son Alexander, is a personal injury attorney who has enriched himself suing people. As a matter of fact his office is located next to Alexander’s. What guarantee do we the taxpayers, landlords and local businesses have that Mrs. Begum will not refer the cases that come before her court to either of this two ambulance chasing shysters?"

  8. Hey, Jimmy, siriously, the models look good in attire, here in the Valley size 18 for women and up, is common.
Good luck with her campaign, but Evelon Dale, is looking for a job, the only problem is, no body wants her. What a joke.

  9. whenever one of the bloggers reports on one of the events of Yolanda Begum, there are angry and bitter comments that it is very obvious come from an opponent that feels very threatened. They throw insults and slander to the journalists, because they reported the event, they throw insults and slander her family, they even mention people that have nothing to do with her campaign. You people are so obviously jealous that you are not convincing. I don't see anybody doing the same when there is a report of any of Erin's events, there is no need for that, why don't you just work on convincing the voters of your merits like everybody else instead of running and ugly slanderous campaign

  10. To the 9:37 P.M. blogger:

The truth hurts when you are blinded by emotion instead of objectivity. This is not a matter of jealously or hurling insults to Ms. Begum. It's about having a qualified candidate for the JP position. What you are witnessing is the discontent and frustration from the community of electing someone with no type of formal education to this very political and responsible position. We can longer settle for mediocrity! With respect to Erin's campaign, it is highly doubtful she will be elected given the baggage she and her family hold.

  12. What a joke that you have to attack your opponents campaign manager. Evelon Dale has been campaign manager to many candidates, that is what she does and is very good at it. And if she wanted a job, she could have had it a long time ago with all the successful campaigns she has run. I am telling you, please focus on your merits, don't try to destroy other people, it usually backfires

  13. Ms Begum is not in office yet, so how can there be discontent and frustration, you probably have never even met her, but besides the point, when I believe in a candidate I donate money, host parties, and campaign for him or her, it is more productive than sitting here writing negative things when you could be writing positive things about your choice of candidate, when someone mentions him or her. think about it, don't be ugly

  14. "Ms Begum is not in office yet, so how can there be discontent and frustration...."

Obviously you have a hard times understanding what was posted so let me put in simple terms, something a fourth grader can understand. The community (the local residents) are tired of unqualified politicians that bring nothing to the table other than scandals and personal gain as has been witnessed by the ongoing federal investigations. We can longer tolerate candidates who lack education, qualifications or understanding of the office they seek. It about time we elect responsible and credible candidates to said positions. If you want to piss your money away and host parties for an unqualified candidate that's your perogative; I certainly won't. I prefer to continue writing the truth about what a great majority of the voting public feels than sugar coat a posting.

  15. I totally agree with you, 10.09, just let me know who is a better choice and why

  16. To the 5:03 AM blogger:

That's a decision you'll have to make and not expect other to make for you. For starters you might want to find out their educational background, qualifications and understanding of the office they seek.

  17. I agree with 11:18 a.m....we must evaluate the candidates and what is required of the position they seek....as for this position...this is a jp court..I mean...it may be the jp court...but they do handle actual cases and evictions....so my question is this....mrs. Begum is an artist...now wants to be a judge. Doesn't make sense to me...another thing that doesn't make sense to me is why the legislature doesn't require the jps to be actual attorneys like the county courts and district courts....it seems to me that the jp should be an attorney or at least someone with a law degree...

  18. The unfortunate thing our, LIBERAL brothers and sisters make life decisions based on FEELING AND DO YOU "LOOK" THE PART. Unlike common sense individuals we look at QUALIFICATIONS, MERIT, VALUES, CHARACTER, and THEIR CORE BELIEVES.
We don't care about THEIR "COLOR," SEX, AGE, TALL, SHORT, FAT, SKINNY as these are priority qualifications LIBERALS "VALUE."
We just want individuals to "GET IT DUNN" !

    ReplyDelete
  19. Of course someone exactly like Erin!! She is an attorney, and she would like to change the requirements to fit her. But jp is the peoples court and in the whole nation only 5% of jps are attorneys, (read why it is not required), you really need someone with common sense, who can be strong when needed and compassionate when required. I just don't see Ernie's and Norma's daughter having either merit, values, character or positive core believes.
Judging by the Hernandeses game of intimidation or bribes to anyone that does not support their daughter, I can only imagine the vindictive judge she will be, under the advise of either of her parents. And do any of them know the meaning of the word compassion?

  20. Oh yes all is blah blah blah and political adds paid by her son Alex "ambulance chaser" Begum, who had to come back to the valley after beeing acussed in San Antonio last year, to atack other atorneys to deviate atention from himself as the real KING in ambulance chasing, and pay campaign adds, and museum expositions etc, etc. this makes me sick, Please brownsville do not be blinded by these people, we do not need them, they want the power to keep on atacking the working comunity of brownville.
