Yet, 52.46% of Cameron County voted for Trump in 2024, many of them personal friends, naively conned by his promise to make our country great again. These were not evil folk, but they darkened the oval for a man who ridiculously claimed Haitian immigrants were eating the cats and dogs of Springfield, Ohio, a man who referred to American soldiers as "losers and suckers," a narcissist, jealous of the attention paid to our military generals, publicly wishing they were more deferential to him like Hitler's generals.
Although not particularly familiar with Charlie Kirk, I was supportive of his First Amendment right to say racist, homophobic shit, just as our country allows Jehovah's Witnesses to read Bible verses at our door and the Ku Klux Klan to burn crosses, actions protected by our Constitution.
But, as our country moves toward fascism, Trump refers to journalists as "fake news," deports students who engage in protest, punishes law firms that supported opponents, and has effectively ended PBS and NPR. These actions are consistent with what Trump's first wife Ivana told us; that he kept a copy of Hitler's speeches on his nightstand.
Artificial intelligence, not to be confused with A1 Steak Sauce, now makes every story suspect. No, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Paul McCartney did not play at a concert together recently. Just obnoxious click bait. And no, German carmakers are not abandoning the U.S. market because of Trump's tariffs, despite those tariffs impacting their U.S. sales.
Although he's pretty effective at it, Donald Trump is not the "Father of the lie." That New Testament phrase described Satan the Devil, who allegedly convinced Adam and Eve that, if they ate the "forbidden fruit," they would become "like God, knowing good and evil."
Edgar Allan Poe's words came too late to help the biblical first human couple, telling us in 1843 to "believe nothing of what you hear and only half what you see."
Can you define fascism, so we have context to how you use the term. We are in dangerous times for sure but using a term no one understands is not how you win the battle.
