I was musing today that, for a writer and barring a health issue, Donald Trump is the gift that keeps on giving, a character that, while far too cartoonish, unrealistic and extreme to seem realistic in a play or movie script, is almost an embarrassment of riches for those writing political commentary or late night TV jokes.
Hell, Trump is a convicted felon, found guilty on 34 counts by a jury of peers, but that was just the tip of the iceberg of his criminality as a corrupt Supreme Court's mindless immunity decision and a laggard, timid Attorney General put the brakes on several more convictions.
To be sure, Trump has been and is a lifelong criminal who reeks dishonesty, fraud and sexual violence, a compulsive liar, a defiler of our nation's most precious values.
Trump University was a fraud and was shut down. The Trump Organization was a fraud and was shut down with Trump prohibited from doing business in New York. Trump already owes hundreds of millions of dollars in compensatory damages with more cases pending.
Having said all that, the biggest issue in the 2024 election was race and/or racism. Trump's campaign appealed successfully to a racist base and racism permeated his campaign.
Donald Trump came by his racism genetically as his own father, Fred Trump, was arrested for violent activities with the Ku Klux Klan and Trump and his dad were sued by the Justice Department for racial discrimination in housing in New York City in 1973.
Trump confirmed that racism in 2015 as he came down the escalator in Trump Tower to announce his presidential candidacy while hurling racial epithets toward Mexican Nationals, calling them "rapists, murderers" or possibly "good people," a phrase he later used to describe white nationalists at Charlottesville.
White Nationalist Stephen Miller, nominated to be Trump's Homeland Security Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff |
Keeping that racist theme alive, Trump's Senior Advisor, white nationalist Stephen Miller, claimed during the campaign that the increase in "Spanish speakers" in our country is a "ferocious attack on the American working class." Miller is the architect behind Trump's Muslim ban of his first administration and the mass deportation of immigrants and cessation of birthrite citizenship proposed for his second.
Still fresh in the minds of most of us, Trump's doubling, tripling and quadrupling down on the lie that Haitian immigrants, in our country legally, were "eating the cats and dogs" of residents of Springfield, Ohio, a lie identified as being of neo-Nazi origin.
Even after being confronted with testimony by city officials of Springfield that his statement was untrue, Trump clung to his evil racist stance, never having been man enough to admit an error.
Now, during his second term, Trump intends to use the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to deport 11,000,000 immigrants from our country, but also wants to overturn the 14th Amendment to the Constitution which currently grants citizenship to those born in this country who are not the children of diplomats.
Anyway, it's going to be a long, four years. Although, local issues generally take precedence, don't be surprised with an occasional article in this blog chronicling our 47th president.
