From the editor: Vivek Ramaswamy is making a case for the hiring of more skilled foreign workers via H-1B, a suggestion that's angered the racist, anti-immigrant Trumpers of MAGA world.

Eschewing a factual, reasoned argument for those hires, the 39 year old Ramaswamy utilizes insults, saying Americans watch too much TV, then goes on to precisely name and characterize the characters from several popular shows, indicating that Ramaswamy has been watching the very same.

Elon Musk generally agrees with Ramaswamy.

Americans have become mediocre and lazy from binging on culture like the TV show, "Friends," Vivek Ramaswamy said recently.

In an appeal to hire migrant workers that sparked a furious row in MAGA circles, the co-chair of Donald Trump’s incoming government efficiency team attacked American culture for “venerating mediocrity over excellence”.

Mr. Ramaswamy suggested Thursday that top U.S. tech firms preferred to hire foreigners because they had a better work ethic.  He said an America that “celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers”.

Ramaswamy, an entrepreneur-turned-politician, urged for “more tutoring, fewer sleepovers, more weekend science competitions, fewer Saturday morning cartoons, more books, less TV, more creating, less ‘chillin,' more extracurriculars, less hanging out at the mall."

He also blamed a series of 1990's TV sitcoms for America needing to hire foreign skilled labor, saying people should be watching “more movies like "Whiplash," fewer reruns of 'Friends'.”

He continued on X: “A culture that venerates Cory from "Boy Meets World" over Zach, Slater and Screech in "Saved by the Bell," or Stefan over Steve Urkel in "Family Matters" will not produce the best engineers.”

Mr Ramaswamy’s comments were met with anger from other sections of the U.S. right, exposing a split in the Trump coalition between skilled immigration-endorsing libertarians and nativist intellectuals and commentators.

“There is nothing wrong with American workers or American culture,” wrote Nikki Hayley, the former South Carolina governor, who Donald Trump has ruled out appointing to a cabinet position.

“All you have to do is look at the border and see how many want what we have. We should be investing and prioritising in Americans, not foreign workers,” she added.

Some suggested that Mr. Ramaswamy’s call for extreme hard work was alien to a traditional American appreciation for leisure.

"Dire shortage": Elon Musk sparks MAGA backlash after calling for more immigrant workers

The row appeared to have begun on Sunday, when Donald Trump named entrepreneur Sriram Krishnan as his AI policy adviser.  This caused panic among some of  Trump’s supporters over Krishnan having previously said the US should lift the caps on permanent residency visas.

Musk and other figures from Silicon Valley jumped to the defence of Krishnan and the use of foreign labor.

“It comes down to this: do you want America to WIN or do you want America to LOSE,”  Musk posted on X. “If you force the world’s best talent to play for the other side, America will LOSE. End of story.”

The world’s richest person later clarified, however, that he only advocated bringing in the top “0.1 per cent of engineering talent”.

Musk also appeared to endorse a post on X that suggested the American Right is split into two factions, described as “tech Right” and “right Right”.

The poster suggested that while the “right Right” wants to see Americans hired, the “tech Right” wants “H-1B visa people to do the jobs” because the “right Right” is not skilled enough.

“This pretty much sums it up,” Mr Musk said in response to the post. “This was eye-opening.”

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO also backed a post on X from Hans C. Nelson, a right-wing content creator, that praised Musk while saying that “high-skilled immigration to America” is positive.

“Are people really dumb enough to think they can convince Elon Musk, an immigrant to the United States who has generated untold wealth and national security advantage for our economy and nation out of thin air, that high skilled immigration is bad for Americans? Like, seriously?” Nelson wrote.

“My tolerance for subtards is limited,” Mr Musk replied.

  1. American workers demand high salaries and are nit impressed by Musk nor Ramaswany. That is why they want workers from India, etc to bring their friends and the relatives of their friends to America. It is the same story known by everybody. They want to control their employees.
